Looking after your car during lock down

At Pulman Group we hope you’re all keeping safe and well during the lock down. We took the decision to close the business on 24th March 2020 for the well being of our staff and customers; we believe this was completely the right thing to do.

Whilst our doors are closed we are able to answer sales and after sales questions during the lock down. Our online team can be contacted Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm, visit www.pulmangroup.co.uk for more information.

We’re sure a lot of people have been filling their days with 1 hour of exercise, maybe a bit of DIY or gardening or just a trip to the shops for essential supplies. But don’t forget your car needs some TLC too! We all need to care of our vehicles especially if they are going to be parked up for more than 2 weeks. We’ve got together 5 Pulman top tips to care for your car while its not being used as regularly.

1. Turning the car over

Leaving your car parked for a long period of time can cause the battery to run flat and potentially damage the internal mechanics.

If you can, a good way to avoid this is by starting your car and driving for about 15 minutes every 4 to 5 days, when you go and get supplies from the supermarket for example. This will prevent the battery from going flat and will help to lubricate the engine. If it’s not possible to take the car for a drive, then simply starting the engine and letting it run for 15 minutes will help to ensure the battery maintains its charge.

If you can move the car it will help the tyres by preventing flat spots and will allow the parking brake to be released regularly.

2. Parking brakes

There are three types of parking brakes on Volkswagen Group vehicles:

Traditional Handbrake

Traditional Handbrake

When parking your car place the vehicle in first gear or reverse depending on any incline or decline considerations.  Then disengage the handbrake.  This will prevent the car rolling but will also prevent the handbrake binding and causing damage. Remember to re-apply the handbrake and to disengage the clutch when you next start the car.

Electronic Handbrake

Electric Handbrake
Again when parking place the vehicle in gear, turn the auto hold function off.  Remove the keys from the ignition and the vehicle will be parked in gear without the parking brake engaged.  As with the traditional handbrake remember to re-apply the handbrake and to disengage the clutch when you next start the car and if you use the Auto Hold function, re-apply that too.

Foot Operated Parking Brake

This type of parking brake is limited to a few VWG vehicles; some older Volkswagen Touareg’s and Phaeton’s.  When parking up these cars place the automatic gear selector in Park (P) and don’t engage the foot operated parking brake.  The vehicle will be held in gear and this will prevent the parking brake binding and causing damage to your car if left standing for a prolonged period.

3. Parking indoors or covering the car

Car Covers
Before storing your car, it’s a good idea to give it a wash to prevent grime from building up and damaging the paintwork.

Remember to clean the tyres, as they tend to hold on to grease, as well as brake shavings and mud which can all cause damage over time, so be sure to clean these thoroughly at the end of the wash.

Rinse the car with free-flowing water before drying with a soft leather chamois or soft micro-fibre towel and finish with a good quality wax.

4. Protect the interior

Remember to clean the interior of your car if it’s going to be left for a long time. Organic debris such as food can rot over time, which at the very least means you’ll be returning to a bad smell, and in some extreme cases can cause damage to your car’s interior.

If your car has leather or coated fabrics, wipe dust away with a dry cloth regularly and for a deeper clean, use a damp cloth and gentle soap to rub the fabric down. Always soak up any leftover moisture with a dry cloth afterwards.

For other fabric seats, be sure to vacuum the material to prevent dust accumulation and never use harsh chemicals or household laundry soaps as these can cause discolouration. When getting out a stain, detergents and solvents can be used to get the mark out, but be careful to not use too much water as moisture can lead to damp and musty odours.

5. Exterior Protection

Before storing your car, it’s a good idea to give it a wash to prevent grime from building up and damaging the paintwork.

Remember to clean the tyres, as they tend to hold on to grease, as well as brake deposits and mud which can all cause damage over time, so be sure to clean these thoroughly at the end of the wash.

If the car has been standing make sure you tackle bird droppings quickly as the uric acid is quite high at 3.5 to 4 ph. The acidity can damage paintwork leaving unsightly rings.

Finally, rinse the car with free-flowing water before drying with a soft leather chamois or soft microfibre towel and finish with a good quality wax or polish.

These tips should help to keep your car in a sound mechanical state and protect it inside and out until you can regularly use it.

Technician Roles At Pulman

Technicians at Pulman

At Pulman Group we are currently recruiting for Technicians. Find out about the role and the fantastic incentives available when you join the Pulman family.

Let’s start with a little introduction to Pulman. Pulman Group dates all the way back to 1998 with one site in Durham (Volkswagen); by 2008 a second Volkswagen dealership opened in Sunderland. In 2010 Pulman SEAT opened in Sunderland followed by the bespoke custom-built SKODA dealership in 2014 in Durham. A fifth dealership joined Pulman in 2020; Pulman SKODA Cramlington. We have sites based right across the North East and we now employ more than 250 people across the group ranging from Workshop to Valeter roles and Head Office to Sales roles!

We pride ourselves on delivering a fantastic customer experience to both our service and sales customers which is why all of our roles require a fantastic level of customer service. We are currently looking for Technicians to join our Pulman Volkswagen (Durham and Sunderland), SEAT and SKODA (Durham) teams!

Pulman Volkswagen Sunderland workshop

So why choose Pulman for your new Technician role? Aside from the growth of Pulman over the years there are many training and opportunities available should you wish to further your career.

Barclay Horton, Master Technician at Pulman Volkswagen, has progressed in his role since he joined the Pulman family nearly 8 years ago! Barclay has furthered his Volkswagen Master Technician role whilst at Pulman by attending High Voltage training and also undertook training to qualify as a SKODA Master Technician. In addition to this in 2014, Barclay was shortlisted to the top 4 in the UK for the Volkswagen Master Technician Qualification World Championship; he narrowly missed the final in Germany!

George Kenny, Master Technician at Pulman Volkswagen Durham, joined the Pulman family from the very beginning in 1998 as a Technician. By 2003 after vigorous training and exams he qualified to become a Master Technician. George still undergoes training to ensure his skills are kept to the highest of quality and meets both Pulman’s and Volkswagen’s standards. George holds a vast number of training qualifications including License Technician (2004), Group Specialist (2006) and High Voltage Technician (2010) to name a few. As well as a Master Technician, George is also one of the stars of our YouTube channel, watch his video back in 2014 with Pulman and Volkswagen where he simply describes everything you need to know about a cambelt/timing belt.

Graham Nixon, Technician at Volkswagen Sunderland, started his career originally as a valeter when he was 18 in 1986. He was then promoted to a Supervisor in the cleaning bay the same year (when the garage was previously owned by Mill Garages). When Pulman was acquiring the Mill Garage Site in 2008, Graham at the age of 40, started an evening course at college, where he spent two nights a week studying. Following on from his studies Graham achieved an NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Vehicle Engineering and at the age of 40 he qualified as a Technician, which has now been his role at Pulman for the past 12 years!

When you join Pulman as a Technician there are fantastic incentives which come with the role alongside the training and progression opportunities. From your training you’ll become an authorised Volkswagen, SEAT or SKODA Technician (dependent on which branch you are based at) meaning you’ll know the ins and outs to diagnose, repair and service the brand’s products. Incentives at Pulman include a competitive salary, monthly & year-end bonus schemes, pension and incentive schemes and 22 days’ holiday!

Start your journey today at Pulman. We are looking for individuals who are excited about working with Volkswagen, SEAT and SKODA brands and the superb range of vehicles the brand has to offer. If this sounds like you or someone you know, apply today!

Beat the Tax Increase on the 1st April For New Cars

Are you looking to purchase a new car? Avoid paying more for your new car as the road tax will increase from the 1st April 2020.

The Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) or road fund licence is what every driver pays in the UK. The VED looks at for example the type of vehicle itself, the CO2 emissions emitted, the fuel type and the engine size, at the time of the first registration to calculate the cost of road tax.

Over the last few years the way car manufacturers test the CO2 emissions emitted has changed. Previously it was through the New European Driving Cycle test (NEDC), however due to car and technological developments it has been deemed that this test is not a true or ‘real-life driving’ reflection.

Therefore, this test is being replaced by the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Procedure (WLTP). Giving a more realistic measurement of fuel consumption, driving range and CO2 emissions.

This change of tax and introduction of WLTP testing will start from the 1st April for VED and 6th April for Company car, Benefit-in-Kind tax.

1st April 2020 Tax bands:

(Data from Gov.uk)

This increase will affect all new cars from the 1st April. This increase does not apply to used cars or cars registered in previous years.

To find out how much a new Volkswagen, SEAT, CUPRA or SKODA could increase by after the 1st April please contact us on enquiries@pulmangroup.co.uk or

Pulman…The New Name For ŠKODA In Cramlington

Pulman SKODA Cramlington team formerly Silbury SKODA

Pulman are proud to announce the takeover of an already established family-run retailer in Northumberland, north of Newcastle.

Pulman Group have recently acquired the Silbury ŠKODA site in Cramlington, Northumberland (28th January 2020). Silbury ŠKODA has been established since 2006, and just like Pulman Group, a family-run retailer which already proves its values fit with the Pulman brand.

Pulman are not only welcoming the former Silbury showroom but have also welcomed all 28 staff members to join the Pulman family. The total number of employees now employed by Pulman exceeds 250 which truly emphasises that Pulman are one big family.

Although Cramlington is a new catchment area for the Group, Pulman have been well-established across Durham and Sunderland for the past 22 years therefore understands the market needs and customer demand across the North East.

Pulman Group’s award-winning experience of being a top ŠKODA retailer and their current relationship with ŠKODA UK provides a fantastic platform to launch the new showroom successfully.

Ian Buckle, Managing Director, speaking of the acquisition said “We knew this business was a fantastic fit to our family run business here in the North East. The culture we have found at this award-winning family business further confirms our confidence to invest and grow it to new levels.  We fully expect Pulman Skoda Cramlington to benefit hugely from our Group support functions and allow the customer focussed teams to deliver a fantastic Pulman customer experience.”

Pulman History

Pulman Group have been a family-run retailer since 1998 which welcomed the first Pulman Volkswagen showroom in Durham. Whilst the showroom you see today on Abbey Road was being built, Pulman Volkswagen operated from a pop-up showroom with just 17 employees. The flagship Durham site was the first retailer in the UK to have a café inside the showroom (Café Dafté).

Fast forward 10 years and Pulman acquired Mill Garages on Newcastle Road in Sunderland in 2008 making it the second Pulman Volkswagen site across the North East. The site has undergone a major expansion of the used car forecourt, showroom refurbishment and became an authorised ŠKODA service repairer.

By 2010, Pulman attained Alexandra Bridge Cars and expanded the Pulman brand to offer SEAT. In 2019 the SEAT showroom underwent a huge showroom, external and workshop refurbishment with Pulman investing over £300,000. Pulman SEAT also became one of only twenty-two retailers across the UK to become CUPRA Specialists, and the only specialists in the North East.

16 years since the launch of Pulman was one of the most exciting years for the company with the launch of Pulman ŠKODA in Durham. Originally the ŠKODA showroom was a pop-up showroom which only showcased four models; this was located by the side of Pulman Volkswagen in Durham. Behind the scenes over a 2-year period the purpose-built ŠKODA showroom was being built in Belmont Industrial Estate. By 2016 the new showroom was open to the public after a £2,800,000 investment completed with Café Dafté; the second Café from Pulman.

Today, Pulman Group now have 5 sites based across the North East; Pulman Volkswagen (Durham and Sunderland), Pulman SEAT and CUPRA (Sunderland) and Pulman ŠKODA (Durham and Cramlington).

It’s no secret that Pulman Group deliver a fantastic customer experience, and this will only continue to the north of the Tyne and beyond.

Driving Home For Christmas

Driving home for Christmas driving tips

Many families will take to the roads this Christmas to meet relatives. Take a look at our top tips for staying safe on the roads this festive season…

Whether you’re heading home for Christmas, visiting family members afar or spending Christmas in a holiday home, it’s important that you check over your car before heading on these journeys and stay safe on the road during the festive period. Take a look at our top tips below.

Check The Weather & Traffic Before You Set Off

Although so far the UK weather has been quite mild, there may still be some risks of black ice and flooding. Make sure you check the weather the evening before you set off so you can plan your route and drive to the conditions. If there is going to be snow or heavy rainfall, drive slower and leave a larger distance between yourself and the car in front.

It’s also wise to check the traffic before you head off on your journey in case there are any accidents, flood warnings or road closures in place. It’s best to check with your local news or input the directions into Google Maps and Google will provide you with the quickest route.

Avoid Driver’s Fatigue

If you’re travelling far this Christmas, ensure you have had plenty of sleep the night before, and if possible, switch the dedicated driver throughout the journey. If you do come across tired and you’re the only driver, take regular breaks at service stations for a quick drink and a bite to eat; it’s also wise to turn the heating down in your car now and again so it doesn’t get too stuffy!

When you’re driving through built-up areas such as towns and villages make sure you’re aware of your surroundings. During the festive period there are a lot more people on the streets enjoying Christmas celebrations and may not be as aware as you when walking near the road!

Make Sure You Have Enough Fuel/Electric Range

If you’re heading on a long journey to spend Christmas with relatives, don’t leave your car short on fuel as some fuel stations close during the Christmas period. There’s nothing worse than driving around a new area searching for a petrol station plus you’ll find fuel pricier if you go to a service station just off the motorway.

If you own an electric vehicle, make sure you charge your EV until you’re about to leave (if you have wallbox installed at home or charge throughout the night). If you’re unable to charge at home, find your local EV station on Zap Map and use a rapid charger.

Be Careful The ‘Morning After’

Many people enjoy a couple of drinks over the festive period but on the morning after if you know you’re going to be the dedicated driver, take it easy the night before and stop drinking early on. Between Christmas and New Year the police are more prone to breathalyse you; if you are the only one driving to meet relatives or friends, wait till later in the day after a good breakfast and lunch before you head off and remember we can all still have a good time without loads of alcohol!

Don’t Leave Gifts On Show

If you’re quickly running to the shops or at a service station before you head on your Christmas journey, make sure you don’t leave any gifts or valuables on show. Anything which looks expensive or wrapped in Christmas paper on show in your car will attract thieves, who may try to break into your car. To avoid the potential risk, place all gifts in the boot or if there is more than one of you travelling, ask if one of the adults wouldn’t mind waiting in the car.

To break it down into simpler terms, say there is a car with this technology stuck in a traffic jam ahead of you and your Golf is still cruising down the motorway approaching this traffic jam. The Car2X technology ahead of you will wirelessly connect and send the real-time data to your car, your car will then inform you to slow down as you are approaching a traffic jam.

Travel Assist ensures that you stay in your lane and during heavy traffic times, can automate acceleration and braking to make driving less tiring in these situations. Stunning New £300,000 Refurbished Pulman SEAT Showroom With Brand New CUPRA Corner

Pulman SEAT and CUPRA team at the new refurbed launch party - October 2019

Over the last 3-months Pulman SEAT have invested over £300,000 in updating their existing SEAT showroom based in Southwick Sunderland. The site has been a SEAT showroom for over 35 years becoming part of the Pulman family in 2010. The fantastic refurbishment revitalises the interior and exterior of the showroom, and also introduces a brand new CUPRA corner.

Little over a month ago the retailer held an exclusive launch event to showcase the brand-new showroom which now includes a specialist corner for the performance sub-brand of SEAT named CUPRA. In 2018 SEAT officially announced that CUPRA, their sporty models, will be a standalone brand in its own right. Pulman are proud to be the North East only CUPRA specialist, with a dedicated area in their showroom and access to the latest CUPRA cars, including an all new CUPRA Formentor. The very first CUPRA standalone car which will be revealed next year.

Pulman SEAT, or more commonly known as Pulman SEAT & CUPRA today, launched in 2010 and up until 2019 no showroom updates have ever been carried out.

A huge 6-figure investment was put into the refurbishment, but not only has the showroom had a total new look, the service area, workshop, back offices and external areas have all had a fantastic makeover too!

The updated design inside the showroom oozes a sleek and contemporary style, which matches the brand values that SEAT is heavily promoting with their 2019 rebrand. The layout of the new showroom is also based on the Avinguda Diagonal in Barcelona (SEAT’s home city), which is the widest avenue in the city which separates the hustle and bustle from the charming and exclusive neighbourhoods. To look at from a birds-eye view all of the streets surrounding this avenue are diagonal cuts, which is what the new Pulman showroom emphasises with the cars displayed in dark grey tiles in comparison to the white tiles, and the desks are all arranged in one corner in a diagonal format facing towards the main entrance.

The refurbishment was completed early September 2019 and an exclusive invite-only event took place on Thursday 17th October 2019. The event had plenty of entertainment during the evening from Gordon Ramsey and Manuel lookalikes to magicians mesmerising the guests, and not to forget the live singer, Andy Barker from the North East who sang some fantastic cover music from the sixties through the years to today. No car retailer event would be complete without a driving race game, this game mimicked real car driving with the car seat and pedals. There was also a chance to ‘crack the safe’ to win a limited edition CUPRA R Estate as well as smaller prizes within the safe.

Drinks and tapas were also served which followed on after a presentation from Andrew Cross and Chris Cavanagh from SEAT UK who spoke of the new showroom and the growth of the SEAT and CUPRA brands.

SEAT UK stated, “It’s an exciting time for SEAT and CUPRA. 2020 is going to be an exciting year for us and the automotive industry in general with electric mobility, with the upcoming models including the SEAT Tarraco PHEV and CUPRA Formentor along with the SEAT Mii Electric which is now available to order. Pulman SEAT are ready for the electric vehicle revolution with products and infrastructure where two charging stations are due to be installed onsite by the end of 2019″.

Pulman SEAT & CUPRA are the only CUPRA Specialists in the North East, and only 1 of 22 across the UK. Bill Mullen, Area Sales Manager, from SEAT UK also attended the event.

Chris Slater, Head of Business at Pulman SEAT commented on the event, “It’s fantastic to see such a turnout to celebrate the re-launch of this dealership. It’s provided the staff with a fantastic environment to work in and to look after our customers.”

“Since Pulman took over the SEAT Brand in Sunderland Alex Paget, General Sales Manager and his team have grown the business in both sales and aftersales.  With the introduction and investment in the exciting new Cupra Brand plus the electric vehicles SEAT have planned for 2020 we’re truly set up to deliver a fantastic customer experience”.
