2018 Diesel and EcoCar SKODA Winners Revealed

SKODA has once again proved itself to be the brand to beat by dominating the 2018 DieselCar and EcoCar Top 50. SKODA were named as class winner in no fewer than four categories and topped more sectors than any other manufacturer in the influential annual chart.

Now in its third year, the DieselCar and EcoCar Top 50 is widely regarded as a definitive guide to the best cars on the market. The winners are compiled from data and feedback from a team of writers who have tested more than 175 cars over the year. All have been road tested in the UK, and judged against the expectations and demands of their target market.

Kodiaq

The Kodiaq added to its incredible list of industry titles by topping the Large SUV category – beating off some tough competition in the process! Ian Robertson, said “Despite undercutting key rivals, the big SKODA offers more performance and practicality at a lower price and with smaller running costs. This five and seven-seater drives brilliantly comes with the option of advanced four-wheel drive to keep you going and is filled to the roof rails with clever features”

Superb

Not to be outdone, the Superb grabbed two awards: Best Large Car and Best Large Estate.  As with the Kodiaq, the judging panel loved the Superb’s value and practicality. “The pricing of this limousine-like model defies belief. On top of this, torque engines and smooth manual or automatic gearboxes make the Superb a superlative tow car, and it’s in its element on the motorway. If you aren’t an SUV enthusiast, the SUperb is a great antidote and yet still hugely spacious”

Octavia

Completing a fantastic haul for SKODA, the Octavia was named Best Medium Estate, marking a lock-out of the large Estate market for the brand. Substantially updates last year, the Octavia wowed the judges with its strength in depth. Explaining why it took top honours Ian Robertson said “the Octavia has a class-leading boot and the vRS performance version is powerful and grippy without attracting any unwanted attention.”

Thanks to the new Karoq’s 17th place finish, no fewer than five SKODA models features in the Top 50 – a remarkable achievement and testament to the value for money delivered by the brand’s efficient diesel models.

It’s a Hat-Trick for Pulman and South Shields FC

Pulman Group, which represents Volkswagen, SEAT and SKODA, has joined forces with the ever-growing South Shields FC for the third year in a row.

Pulman became the Mariners’ official media sponsor three years ago, shortly after Geoff Thompson took over as the club’s chairman and former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder Julio Arca joined the squad. The club has been on a terrific journey since then, winning three league titles and three promotions in a row, and the FA Vase at Wembley in 2017.

Some key stats which show just how far the Mariners have come over the last three years: 126 league games with 101 wins, that’s a win ratio of more than 80%! The average attendance for home games has risen significantly to about 1,500, with two new stands added to Mariners Park for this season. The club enjoys fantastic support in the local community.

South Shields FC joint manager Lee Picton said: “The community has really got behind the club over the last three years and we hope they have enjoyed every minute of it so far.

“We hugely appreciate their support as we strive to achieve more success in the years ahead.

“The support of our partners, including Pulman, is also absolutely crucial for us, and is something we don’t take for granted. Pulman are a superb supporter of the work we are doing and it gives us real delight that the partnership is continuing into this season.”

South Shields now play in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, having been promoted from the North Division last season. The club’s ambition is to earn promotion from this league to the National League North as quickly as possible, alongside plans to develop a community facility which will bring everyone together.

Chris Slater, Pulman Group’s Sunderland site manager, said: “It is fantastic to team up with South Shields once again. “Here at Pulman Group we are passionate about supporting the local area and community. Teaming up with the Mariners is a great way to support the area. We can’t wait to see what South Shields do this year!”

Mariners Park, the home of South Shields Football Club, is located on Shaftesbury Avenue.

Will my car pass its MOT test?

Will your car pass its MOT? We have compiled a list of some of the elements that are checked as part of the MOT test!

Did you know 30% of all MOT faults relate to lighting and signalling?*

To pass the  MOT check the front, rear, brake, fog, indicator and registration plate lights and rear reflectors must:

  • Be correctly positioned and secure
  • Not be obscured
  • Be in good condition
  • Show the correct colour

Check before your test: before your MOT check, have someone walk round your vehicle to check each of the lights while you operate them from the drivers seat

Did you know 9.6% of MOT fails are due to brake issues?*

The overall conditions of the brakes, pedals and levers are inspected, as well  as relevant warning lights. A brake performance test will be carried out to test brake efficiency

Did you know 10% of all MOT faults are related to tyes?*

The tyre must be of an appropriate speed and load rating for the vehicle. Tread depth must not be below the legal limit of 1.6mm, and tyres will be examined for cuts in excess of 25mm

Did you know your registration plate must be clearly legible to someone standing 20 meters away?*

A general inspection of the body, chassis, engine moutings, seats and doors will be made as part of your MOT checks. Every vehicle must permanently display a legible VIN and a speedometer must be fitted and able to illuminate in the dark.

Did you know 6.6% of MOT fails are due to issues with the driver’s view of the road?*

Rear view mirrors and wing mirrors must be secured and provide adequate views to the rear and side. Wipers and washers must sweep enough area to give the driver an adequate view of the road. The area of the windscreen directly in front of the driver must not have any damage or obstruction larger than 10mm

Nearly half of all faults found during an MOT test could be avoided by carrying out simple maintenance, so it’s worthwhile checking items like lights, wiper blades and tyres beforehand so that your car has the best chance of passing first time.  Ready to book your MOT? What is an MOT test?

The MOT tests some important items on your vehicle to check that they meet the legal standards. It is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in the UK for most vehicles over 3 years old. An MOT is not the same as having your vehicle serviced and doesn’t check the general mechanical condition.

Defects found during the MOT are categorised as either

  • Dangerous
  • Major
  • Minor

The category that the MOT tester gives each item will depend on the type of problem and how serious it is. MOT testers will still give advice about items you need to monitor. These are known as ‘advisories’

What does the test cover?

  • Lighting and signalling equipment
  • Steering (including suspension)
  • Brakes
  • Tyres and wheels
  • Seat belts
  • Body, structure and general items
  • Exhaust
  • Drivers view of the road

SKODA have set the supermini standard once again as the new Fabia is announced

Check out the new SKODA Fabia! Fresh front-end design, plus a significant specification boost across the range – LED daytime running lights, Front Assist and Multifunction Trip Computer now as standard – it is a supermini to watch. Interested? This revised Fabia is set to hit the UK next month with a new all-petrol lineup, hatch and estate body styles and five trim level options – Including the Monte Carlo and Colour Edition.

This new, facelifted Fabia is the most advanced and well equipped ever, with a host of new safety systems, boosted specifications and a sharp new look. To meet increased demand for petrol power, ŠKODA has refreshed the Fabia’s engine line-up with three power outputs of 75PS, 95PS and 110PS, the latter of which comes with the option of a seven-speed DSG transmission.

All models in the new range now feature LED daytime running lights as standard along with Front Assist and a Multifunction Trip Computer. Customers stepping up to the SE model can choose from all drivetrain options and gain front fog lights and 15-inch Cygnus alloy wheels over the outgoing model, along with Radio Swing Plus and auto up/down function for the electric windows. Colour Edition models gain 16-inch Vigo alloy wheels in white, silver or black.

Customers opting for the SE L benefit from an even more significant equipment boost over the previous model. The SE L models now feature Amundsen satellite navigation, Infotainment Online (for one year), lighting in the front centre console and 16-inch Evora alloy wheels. These items are in addition to the outgoing Fabia SE L’s already comprehensive specification list.

Looking at the range topper? The ever-popular Fabia Monte Carlo further enhances its reputation for sportiness with a range of new features. These include climate control air conditioning, LED rear lights, rear electric windows and new seat upholstery. The styling package includes a black front spoiler, black roof, black floor mats and carbon-effect dashboard trim.

Buyers will also be able to personalise their Fabia thanks to a vast range of options that include systems and features usually reserved for premium and luxury models. These include Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear View Camera, Driver Fatigue Assistant, and for the first time on Fabia, full LED headlights. The new model also introduces an additional safety system; Blind Spot Detection and Rear Traffic Alert (£390 RRP). Blind Spot detection helps the driver to change lanes safely by registering any vehicles in the blind spot, while Rear Traffic Alert recognises vehicles approaching from the sides when reversing out of parking bays.

Fabia 2018

The Fabia is the brand’s second biggest selling model in the UK after the Octavia, and has been a mainstay of the ŠKODA range since its introduction in 2001. The third-generation supermini was launched in 2014 and has already clocked up more than half a million sales worldwide – making it the brand’s top seller in Europe.
