The SEAT Ateca is Fashionably Late

When it comes to the hugely successful SUV market, SEAT was a late arrival at the party.

But of course, one advantage of being late is that you can see what everyone else is doing. You can take the best bits and, as long as you get the pricing right, you should have a hit on your hands.

Well, the good news is that if you are looking for a medium size SUV, SEAT’s Ateca is a hit. In fact, it continues to rack-up awards at an astonishing rate and is the reigning What Car? magazine Best Family SUV. The Ateca was also named as Company Car magazine’s Best Crossover of 2018

Let’s start with a really important detail. The starting price for the SEAT Ateca is £21,880. This immediately looks like terrific value for money in what is a sizeable vehicle which comes with a decent level of kit as standard.

There’s a good choice of petrol and diesel engines. It’s the usual juggling act….if you want the ultimate in smooth, quiet performance, go for petrol. If you want brilliant economy, go for diesel.

The entry level Ateca SE comes with a 113bhp 1.0 litre 3-cylinder petrol engine. You can also opt for a 1.5 litre petrol unit. If you prefer economy, the 1.6TDi will give you 61mpg although you’ll need to find another £2150. That’s a leap in price so, if you don’t intend doing a lot of miles or carrying a full load on a regular basis, go for the petrol model. If you want performance AND economy, try the 2.0 litre diesel engines which are available in two levels of power output. The 188bhp engine is seriously punchy (0-60 in 7.5 seconds) and actually sounds good. There’s also a 2.0 litre petrol which is quick and extremely quiet.

All of the engines, apart from the 1.0 litre petrol unit, can have an automatic gearbox instead of a 6-speed manual ‘box. If you go for the more powerful engines, you can even choose 4-wheel drive. Obviously, four-wheel drive improves road holding and is handy if you live out in the sticks, but for the vast majority of drivers front wheel drive will be fine.

Arguably the best all-rounder is the 1.5 petrol engine. You’ll get decent performance with 0-60 taking under 8 seconds, but you’ll still manage around 50mpg thanks to a deactivation system which shuts down part of the engine whenever you don’t need a lot of power.

There are six levels of trim starting with SE then climbing through SE Technology, SE L, FR, FR Sport, Xcellence and Xcellence Lux. Every Ateca gets air con, 6.5-inch media touchscreen with USB; four electric tinted windows, height adjustment to both front seats, leather steering wheel with remote controls, remote central locking, cruise control, rear parking sensors and electric mirrors. All other levels of trim get sat nav, DAB radio, bigger touchscreen, LED headlights and fog lights, and chrome roof rails. Every SEAT Ateca comes with a high standard of safety kit.

The Ateca is great to drive. It’s roomy, comfortable and with a seriously premium feel to the interior. Families will love it.

It is available from the family run Pulman SEAT retailer based in Sunderland, who are award winning themselves for fantastic customer service. Alex Paget, Pulman SEAT Sales Manager comments: “We are excited that the new SE L has been added to the ATECA range. Available with over £1,700 worth of additional features above the SE.”

The SEAT Ateca may have been a late rival at the SUV party, but it was well worth the wait.

The New Volkswagen Touareg: A Hi-Tech SUV

The third generation Volkswagen Touareg is available now at Pulman Volkswagen. It is the most advanced SUV that Volkswagen has ever produced with the very latest technology, design, comfort and driving experience.

Every model will offer the option of Innovision Cockpit (standard on the top-spec model) which comprises an information, communication and entertainment unit that can be fully personalised. Not only is this a first in the Touareg, it’s a first for Volkswagen.

At the moment, there are two engine outputs available from a 3.0 litre V6 TDi turbo diesel engine. You can choose from either a 228bhp unit or a more powerful 282bhp engine, both of which come with an 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox and 4MOTION four wheel drive as standard. Rumours abound that a thumping V8 engine will arrive late 2019 along with a petrol V6. You can also expect a hybrid to appear at some stage

There are three trim levels…SEL, R-Line and R-Line Tech. They are available with either diesel engine. The 228bhp Touareg SEL starts at £48,995. You’ll need to add a further £2600 if you fancy the 282bhp engine. The Touareg R-Line starts at £52,495, and the current top of the range Touareg R-Line Tech kicks off at £55,595.

And here’s some really good news. Even though this is a brand new model from Volkswagen, Pulman can offer the new Touareg with a seriously tempting finance offer. For example, if you go for the Touareg R-Line through Volkswagen Financial Services Solutions Personal Contract Plan, you will receive a deposit contribution of £3,000 which results in a monthly payment of £499.00. And, if you who purchase your Touareg through a personal contract plan (PCP), you will be eligible for two services priced at £299 which represents cracking value.

The entry level 3.0 V6 TDI is likely to be the most popular in the UK. It combines terrific economy for this size of car with a return of 42.8 mpg, but it also feels really lively with 0-60mph taking a shade over 6 seconds. Top speed is 146 mph. These are impressive figures for a hugely capable, sizable 4×4.

However, it’s clear that Volkswagen is aware that most Touaregs will be used as family cars, so they’ve ensured that the ride is extremely comfy. It’s hard to imagine a better car for long motorway journeys, loaded to the gunwales with clobber.

Externally, Volkswagen has remained faithful to the Touareg styling. Yes it’s very different to the outgoing model, but it is still instantly recognisable as Volkswagen’s top of the range SUV. The new front grille makes it stand out.

Needless to say that every Touareg is well equipped. Sat nav, leather upholstery, heated front seats, realty smart alloy wheels, DAB radio, front and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, adaptive cruise control, LED headlights and rear lights, and a 7-inch colour TFT display which will control just about everything, all come as standard.

Move up to R-Line and you get the sporty addition of deep front and rear bumpers, side skirts, bigger alloys, plus a panoramic sunroof, electrically operated hatch and a reversing camera. The top of the range R-Tech trim comes with…well…everything, including the clever and very handsome Innovision Cockpit which has a 15 inch display. It looks really cool. Works well too.

Despite the latest Volkswagen Touareg being bigger (wider, taller, longer) than the outgoing model, Volkswagen has actually made it lighter. This has contributed to the improved performance and economy figures when compared to its predecessor.

In other words, the third generation of Volkswagen’s Touareg is hugely capable, fully equipped, lively yet economical….it is certain to be a huge success….AND…it’s available now at Pulman Volkswagen Durham and Sunderland, you’re only family owned Volkswagen retailer in the North East.

Preparing Your Car For Winter: Winter Checks

Did you know every year, 24% of weather-related vehicle accidents occur during bad weather? Whether it is snowing, raining, or icy, with the Pulman Winter Check we make sure your vehicle stays in perfect condition! As the evenings begin to get darker earlier and the weather gets colder, roads can be hazardous and you need to be confident that our vehicles are safe and reliable for the season.

For just £20 our technicians will make sure that you are set for winter, this includes…

1) Winter Care Packs (Autoglym De-icer, Ice-scraper, Volkswagen Group screenwash)

2) Express Visual Check

3) Free Wash and Vacuum

What is the Express Visual Check?

The Express Visual Check is a 34 point visual check of all the wear and tear items on a customer’s car. The check will be carried out when your vehicle comes into a Pulman workshop no matter the age and condition of the vehicle.  The check is designed to provide you with complete peace of mind and allows us to highlight potential wear and tear issues…

What are winter tyres and are they worth it?

The main difference between winter tyres and regular tyres is tread depth. On a winter tyre it starts at between 8 and 9 mm, as opposed to 7 and 8mm on a regular tyre.

The grooves within a winter tyre are wider and deeper as well, forming a larger channel for snow and water to travel through – this helps maintain grip on the road.

Finally, the rubber used to make winter tyres contains a larger percentage of natural rubber and silica in the compound. This doesnt harden as much as synthetic rubber in cold weather, which also improves the tyre’s grip.

How should I store my winter tyres?

Storage should be top of your list on things to think about, as its an important part of maintaining the lifespan of the tyre. They should be stored on the rims and stacking should be avoided. Additionally, they should be kept in a dark, dry environment? Sounds like a lot to consider right? Not necessarily! Here at Pulman Hotel4Tyres we store your tyres when you’re not using them, and fit them for you when the season changes!

In short, we will…

Supply, store, and fit winter tyres – Supply you with winter tyres and store them until you are ready to have them fitted (free of charge)

Store and re-fit summer tyres – When the winter tyres are fitted, staff also fully check and store your summer tyres. After the winter period, they then re-fir your summer tyres

Store used winter tyres – When the summer tyres are re-fitted, as part of the package, Hotel4Tyres will check and store your used tyres

Best Family Car 2018: Why the SKODA Octavia Is Right For You

The SKODA Octavia has always been one of the most practical cars in its class.  Most of its competitors have less space for passengers and less space for luggage than the Octavia – but there’s more to a family car than just space right?

In fact – on top generous boot and interior space – the Octavia is full of the SKODA ‘Simply Clever‘ features that we know and love. Need to scrape the ice off your window before work? No problem, there’s an ice-scraper located in your fuel cap. What about keeping your car tidy with kids on long journeys? With practical bins located in the doors, there will be no mess left behind! Hate it when you place your parking ticket on the dash and it blows off when you open the door? Yep, we do too! In the SKODA Octavia you get a really useful ticket holder to make sure that your ticket stays put.

Not only is it a Simply Clever car, the Octavia also boasts the best rear space of any family hatch. There’s loads of head and elbow room so there’ll be no fighting in the back of the car on long journeys! Speaking of spending a lot of time in the back of the car, as an optional extra the central armrest comes with two cup holders on SE models, but comes as standard on SE L upwards. On top of this document pockets on the backs of the front seats are standard and deep door pockets are roomy enough to hold a 1.0 litre drinks bottle (or lots of ipads and toys to keep kids entertained).

On top of this rear seat space, the Octavia’s huge boot space is a definitely a huge advantage. Despite its sloping lid, its as tall as most hatches and much much longer! While most cars in this class can fit around five carry-on suitcases in their boot, the Octavia boot is so long it can fit up to 11 carry-on suitcases!

The boot also has some fantastic features such as velcro restraints that are clipped neatly to the side of the boot. These can be used to restrain an item -you simply unclip them and stick them to the boot floor to lock them in place – no more shopping bags tipping over and bruising your bananas while going around a roundabout! Like to go on country walks? Or need somewhere to keep muddy football boots? You can add various practical add-ons, including a double-sided boot floor, which has carpet on one side and a washable rubber surface on the other.

The SEAT Ibiza FR Review

It’s time to review the SEAT Ibiza! SEAT can do no wrong at the moment. Their Arona and Ateca models continue to rack-up 5-star awards and when you have everything from a small city car (the Mii) to a seven-seater (the Alhambra), there is very nearly a car to suit every taste. SEAT arrived in the UK in 1985 and the car leading from the front was the Ibiza. Since then, it’s grown-up and matured into a brilliant hatchback.

It still represents great value for money with the entry-level SE trim and is kitted out with air-con, Bluetooth, a decent audio system and a load of safety kit. You get a choice of two engines with this trim; 1.0 MPi 74bhp petrol and 1.6TDi 79bhp diesel. It’s the usual story; if you want refinement go for the zingy 3-cylinder petrol engine, or if you want stunning economy up to 74.3mpg, go for the diesel. Both use a 5-speed manual gearbox.

For a little bit extra you move up to the SE Tech trim. This adds a much bigger colour touchscreen which also includes satellite navigation. You can also opt for the 1.0 litre 94bhp TSi petrol engine which is terrific. You’ll still get 60mpg but your 0-60 time is a highly respectable 10.9 seconds. In other words, you can either pootle around town and eke out every mile from every gallon, or have some fun. It also means you will easily keep pace with motorway traffic.

For some serious performance and a terrific level of standard equipment, head for the SEAT Ibiza FR. The suspension is stiffened and you can choose the 148bhp TSi engine which uses a 6-speed manual gearbox. You can also get an auto. 0-60 is a lively 7.9 seconds; top speed is 134mph. Amazingly you can still expect 57mpg. 17inch alloys come as standard along with twin exhaust pipes, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, sports seats and DAB radio.

And if you want a fully loaded SEAT Ibiza, cast your eyes over the Ibiza Xcellence. Wow.

The ride is one of the best around for this size of car. There’s the happy compromise of supple at slow speeds, but taut when you’re pressing-on. Handling is top notch and utterly predictable. The Ibiza is a joy to drive.

The interior is roomy, comfortable and has a genuine feel of quality.

Our favourite? Go for the FR trim and one of the more punchy petrol engines. They’re lively, well priced and aren’t far off being as economical as the diesel versions.

The best idea is to call into Pulman SEAT in Sunderland and have a chat with the sales guys. They’ll soon sort out which is the best Ibiza for you.

Oh, and don’t forget, keep checking the Pulman SEAT website because there are always some fantastic deals.

It also comes kitted out with a host of advanced technology such as the Virtual Cockpit, the DCC Adaptive Chassis and progressive steering.

Even as a sports star, the Kodiaq vRS remains a true Kodiaq with space for five or seven people. The five-seater offers a boot capacity of 600 litres, whilst the seven-seaters boot can hole 231 litres with all of the seats occupied.

The new SKODA Vision vRS – Pairs Motor Show 2018

Did you catch the big reveal yesterday? SKODA offered up the chance for a sneak peek of the Vision vRS before the official start of the Paris Motor Show 2018.  If you missed it, you can watch it here…

Whereas the Kodiaq vRS is a car for the now, the Vision vRS is a concept which offers an insight into the future of the SKODA vRS models. The Vision vRS promises to combine fine driving experience and environmental responsibility in equal measure – and we can’t wait to see it in our showroom!

The new Vision RS is the first car in vRS history that would be a plug-in hybrid: the 1.5-litre TSI engine gives the Vision vRS an output of 110 kW. This is then supported by a 75 kW electric motor, giving the range of 70 kilometres on the battery alone. Perfect for those who are looking for a car that can give them emission-free local driving. Looking for an electric car to get you from A to B now? Head over to our electric vehicle blog by clicking here

Enough about the engine, let’s talk about the inside! The Vision vRS concept comes with a large infotainment display, seat covers made from vegan materials, and a connection with Alexa – perfect for those who like a bit of carpool karaoke on the way to school or work.

Besides all this sportiness and emotiveness, this five-door concept study also impresses with functionality and a spacious interior.

Electric and hybrid cars are really taking off and we can’t wait to take the Vision vRS for a spin. This concept demonstrates how SKODA envisages its sporty vRS models in the future.

Which Electric Vehicle Is the Best?

Electric cars are taking off! With more than 150,000 plug-in cars on the road, up 50% over the past year, drivers are looking to ditch more traditional engines – but which one should you buy? And is electric the right road to head down for you?

Like traditional cars, electric vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, and which EV is best for you will depend on a variety of factors. You will need proper access to charging points at work and home, so you can top up your battery enough to meet your typical daily range.

If you often make long journeys make sure that your local roads and motorways have the infrastructure to support charging en route, or consider an alternative like a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. These mix battery technology and petrol and diesel power which will help you stay on the road when pure electric range simply isn’t enough.

The Volkswagen e-Golf (EV)

The Volkswagen e-Golf keeps everything you liked about the Golf, and wraps it in a cleaner, silent, electric package. The electric motor doesn’t compromise on technology or performance. It is kitted out with satellite navigation, smartphone integration (including MirrorLink). Impressively, the e-Golf has an impressive range of 186 miles (NEDC)** and the simple to use driving profile settings allow you to optimise energy efficiency or maximise the car’s power!

The Golf GTE (Hybrid)

The Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid which means you can drive with electricity and drive with petrol. The Golf GTE has a pure electric range of just 31 miles – much lower than the e-Golf , but with the petrol engine you can travel much further without having to stop and charge. However, like the e-Golf the GTE is full of the latest technology to give you a safe and comfortable journey.

The up! is perfect for city living and this electric version is no different! Ready to drive you into the future of motoring the e-up! has a range of up to 99 miles on a single charge**. Additionally, a public high-speed DC charging station will charge your e-up in just 30 minutes, while an at home wall box gets the job done in 6 hours. So you can fully charge your car while you’re doing your weekly shop, or overnight when you’re at home!

Passat Saloon and Passat Estate

The Passat Saloon and the Passat Estate have both moved over to the green side with their GTE equivalents – the Passat GTE in saloon and Estate. Just like the Golf GTE they rely on two engines that they switch between for optimum performance: an innovative electric motor and a conventional petrol engine. Similarly, their range is not as large as the e-up! and e-Golf, but the hybrid technology means you can travel further for longer without having to stop.

Electric Vehicles to keep an eye out for…

The electric vehicle segment is beginning to gain mainstream appeal. The rate progression in electric vehicles has been remarkable. Previously electric cars were seen as extremely ‘niche’ with fully electric vehicles only accounting for a tiny proportion of total car sales, but things are beginning to change…

  • Superb plug-in hybrid
  • Citigo-e
  • Vision E
  • SEAT Born

**The actual range achieved in realistic conditions differs from this result during normal driving operation and is dependent on driving style, speed, use of comfort features or auxiliary equipment, ambient temperature, number of passengers/load, choice of driving profile (Normal, ECO, ECO+), and terrain
