The New SEAT Leon – everything you need to know

The new SEAT Leon is now open for orders and available to test drive at Pulman SEAT. The all-new SEAT Leon brings with it a strong design evolution with a more determined face and smoother lines.

LIGHTING

The all-new Leon lights the way in the segment with a range of innovative lighting technologies, including wraparound interior ambient light, rear coast-to-coast light, dynamic blinkers, full LED highlights and welcome lights.

The full LED technology used in the headlights improves vision, making even the darkest road visible to the driver. Incorporating the SEAT’s signature LED lighting design. The side mirrors include integrated LED indicators, and on vehicles with the full LED option including welcome lights you will see “Hola! Projected onto the ground as you activate the vehicle.

Inside the new Leon enhances the cabin experience with a full LED wraparound ambient lighting system. The lighting sweeps around the front of the cabin, from the front doors and across the top of the dashboard.

CONNECTIVITY

The all-new SEAT Leon is even more connected to the world giving the consumer greater opportunity to take their digital lives with them into the car. At the heart of the Leon’s system is its SEAT Digital Cockpit, which offers a 10” infotainment system with voice and gesture control.

The Full Link Technology – Android Auto and wireless access to Apple’s CarPlay, allows users to connect their mobile devices to the vehicle’s infotainment system. The online connectivity unit also has an embedded SIM meaning that the all-new Leon will never lose its connection to the digital world. Offering additional digital products and services such as eCall service, which directly contacts the emergency services should an incident occur, sending invaluable data to the emergency services such as car location, engine type and number of passengers.

Downloading the SEAT Connect app, allows users to remotely access their vehicles data: driving data, parking position, vehicles status, including doors and lights. Set up speed and anti-theft alters.

THE ENGINES

There is a fantastic suite of engines available; petrol (TSI), diesel (TDI), mild-hybrid (eTSI) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) which are coming soon.

The new Leon’s petrol engines offer direct-injection, turbocharged units and power outputs between 90PS and 190PS. The 1.0 litre TSI three-cylinder units produced 90PS and 110PS, the larger 1.5 litre TSI offers 130PS and 150PS. The 2.0 litre TSI linked to the dual-clutch transmission produces 190PS.

The diesel engines have two diesel options both with 2.0 litre TDI units. 115PS is available with a manual transmission only, while the 150PS is offered with the DSG as well. The Sportstourer is also available with 150PS unit for a DSG gearbox and 4Drive system. The TDI units introduce a new twin dosing SCR system that includes dual AdBlue injection to reduce significantly NOx emissions compared to previous Leon diesel engines.

The mild hybrid (mHEV) eTSI allows the car to provide even greater efficiency levels. This system is available with the 1.0 TSI 110PS and the 1.5 litre 150PS both in combination with the DSG transmission and a 48v mild-hybrid technology.

Plug-in hybrid expands SEATs electric car option. Joining a 1.4 litre TSI petrol engine electric motor, offering six-speed DSG transmission and producing 204PS of power. It will also allow drivers to use electric only mode which gives a range of up to 60km (WLTP) using just the energy stored in the vehicles battery.

Safety is also at the heart of all-new SEAT Leon. Integrating some of the most advanced driver assistance systems available, including predictive adaptive cruise control, emergency assist and travel assist, to make it the safest car the brand has ever made!

AutoCar – ‘2020 SEAT Leon launched with major tech gains and hybrid power. Leon offers more rear space, new infotainment and electrified petrol engines.’

Auto Express – ‘SEAT’s engineers have also worked hard to make the Leon’s ambient lighting more than just a personalisation gimmick.’

What Car? – ‘The SEAT Leon has steadily risen to be considered among the top tier of the family hatchback class.’

The Times – ‘unsurprisingly it shares a lot of the new technology and powertrains with its best-selling sister car, the VW Golf. But while the new Golf features subtle exterior design changes, the new Leon has a much bolder look when compared to the previous model.’

Looking after your car during lock down

At Pulman Group we hope you’re all keeping safe and well during the lock down. We took the decision to close the business on 24th March 2020 for the well being of our staff and customers; we believe this was completely the right thing to do.

Whilst our doors are closed we are able to answer sales and after sales questions during the lock down. Our online team can be contacted Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm, visit www.pulmangroup.co.uk for more information.

We’re sure a lot of people have been filling their days with 1 hour of exercise, maybe a bit of DIY or gardening or just a trip to the shops for essential supplies. But don’t forget your car needs some TLC too! We all need to care of our vehicles especially if they are going to be parked up for more than 2 weeks. We’ve got together 5 Pulman top tips to care for your car while its not being used as regularly.

1. Turning the car over

Leaving your car parked for a long period of time can cause the battery to run flat and potentially damage the internal mechanics.

If you can, a good way to avoid this is by starting your car and driving for about 15 minutes every 4 to 5 days, when you go and get supplies from the supermarket for example. This will prevent the battery from going flat and will help to lubricate the engine. If it’s not possible to take the car for a drive, then simply starting the engine and letting it run for 15 minutes will help to ensure the battery maintains its charge.

If you can move the car it will help the tyres by preventing flat spots and will allow the parking brake to be released regularly.

2. Parking brakes

There are three types of parking brakes on Volkswagen Group vehicles:

Traditional Handbrake

Traditional Handbrake

When parking your car place the vehicle in first gear or reverse depending on any incline or decline considerations.  Then disengage the handbrake.  This will prevent the car rolling but will also prevent the handbrake binding and causing damage. Remember to re-apply the handbrake and to disengage the clutch when you next start the car.

Electronic Handbrake

Electric Handbrake
Again when parking place the vehicle in gear, turn the auto hold function off.  Remove the keys from the ignition and the vehicle will be parked in gear without the parking brake engaged.  As with the traditional handbrake remember to re-apply the handbrake and to disengage the clutch when you next start the car and if you use the Auto Hold function, re-apply that too.

Foot Operated Parking Brake

This type of parking brake is limited to a few VWG vehicles; some older Volkswagen Touareg’s and Phaeton’s.  When parking up these cars place the automatic gear selector in Park (P) and don’t engage the foot operated parking brake.  The vehicle will be held in gear and this will prevent the parking brake binding and causing damage to your car if left standing for a prolonged period.

3. Parking indoors or covering the car

Car Covers
Before storing your car, it’s a good idea to give it a wash to prevent grime from building up and damaging the paintwork.

Remember to clean the tyres, as they tend to hold on to grease, as well as brake shavings and mud which can all cause damage over time, so be sure to clean these thoroughly at the end of the wash.

Rinse the car with free-flowing water before drying with a soft leather chamois or soft micro-fibre towel and finish with a good quality wax.

4. Protect the interior

Remember to clean the interior of your car if it’s going to be left for a long time. Organic debris such as food can rot over time, which at the very least means you’ll be returning to a bad smell, and in some extreme cases can cause damage to your car’s interior.

If your car has leather or coated fabrics, wipe dust away with a dry cloth regularly and for a deeper clean, use a damp cloth and gentle soap to rub the fabric down. Always soak up any leftover moisture with a dry cloth afterwards.

For other fabric seats, be sure to vacuum the material to prevent dust accumulation and never use harsh chemicals or household laundry soaps as these can cause discolouration. When getting out a stain, detergents and solvents can be used to get the mark out, but be careful to not use too much water as moisture can lead to damp and musty odours.

5. Exterior Protection

Before storing your car, it’s a good idea to give it a wash to prevent grime from building up and damaging the paintwork.

Remember to clean the tyres, as they tend to hold on to grease, as well as brake deposits and mud which can all cause damage over time, so be sure to clean these thoroughly at the end of the wash.

If the car has been standing make sure you tackle bird droppings quickly as the uric acid is quite high at 3.5 to 4 ph. The acidity can damage paintwork leaving unsightly rings.

Finally, rinse the car with free-flowing water before drying with a soft leather chamois or soft microfibre towel and finish with a good quality wax or polish.

These tips should help to keep your car in a sound mechanical state and protect it inside and out until you can regularly use it.

Driving Home For Christmas

Driving home for Christmas driving tips

Many families will take to the roads this Christmas to meet relatives. Take a look at our top tips for staying safe on the roads this festive season…

Whether you’re heading home for Christmas, visiting family members afar or spending Christmas in a holiday home, it’s important that you check over your car before heading on these journeys and stay safe on the road during the festive period. Take a look at our top tips below.

Check The Weather & Traffic Before You Set Off

Although so far the UK weather has been quite mild, there may still be some risks of black ice and flooding. Make sure you check the weather the evening before you set off so you can plan your route and drive to the conditions. If there is going to be snow or heavy rainfall, drive slower and leave a larger distance between yourself and the car in front.

It’s also wise to check the traffic before you head off on your journey in case there are any accidents, flood warnings or road closures in place. It’s best to check with your local news or input the directions into Google Maps and Google will provide you with the quickest route.

Keep Your Car Maintained

To ensure your car is ready for the cold winter months why not book your car in for a Pulman Winter Health Check for £20*. Included in the check is an Express Visual Check which identifies any health issues which may need fixing immediately or in the near future. Plus take home your own Winter Care Kit which includes De-Icer, Ice-Scraper and Screenwash. After your car has had its Winter Check at Pulman, it will receive a wash and vacuum.

Make sure all of your essential fluids are topped up such as your brake fluid, oil, Screenwash and check your tyres have enough air in them. As the evenings turn darker earlier during the winter months, make sure you check your lights too.

Pulman Winter Health Check

Avoid Driver’s Fatigue

If you’re travelling far this Christmas, ensure you have had plenty of sleep the night before, and if possible, switch the dedicated driver throughout the journey. If you do come across tired and you’re the only driver, take regular breaks at service stations for a quick drink and a bite to eat; it’s also wise to turn the heating down in your car now and again so it doesn’t get too stuffy!

When you’re driving through built-up areas such as towns and villages make sure you’re aware of your surroundings. During the festive period there are a lot more people on the streets enjoying Christmas celebrations and may not be as aware as you when walking near the road!

Tower bridge car traffic in London

Make Sure You Have Enough Fuel/Electric Range

If you’re heading on a long journey to spend Christmas with relatives, don’t leave your car short on fuel as some fuel stations close during the Christmas period. There’s nothing worse than driving around a new area searching for a petrol station plus you’ll find fuel pricier if you go to a service station just off the motorway.

If you own an electric vehicle, make sure you charge your EV until you’re about to leave (if you have wallbox installed at home or charge throughout the night). If you’re unable to charge at home, find your local EV station on Zap Map and use a rapid charger.

Be Careful The ‘Morning After’

Many people enjoy a couple of drinks over the festive period but on the morning after if you know you’re going to be the dedicated driver, take it easy the night before and stop drinking early on. Between Christmas and New Year the police are more prone to breathalyse you; if you are the only one driving to meet relatives or friends, wait till later in the day after a good breakfast and lunch before you head off and remember we can all still have a good time without loads of alcohol!

Don’t Leave Gifts On Show

If you’re quickly running to the shops or at a service station before you head on your Christmas journey, make sure you don’t leave any gifts or valuables on show. Anything which looks expensive or wrapped in Christmas paper on show in your car will attract thieves, who may try to break into your car. To avoid the potential risk, place all gifts in the boot or if there is more than one of you travelling, ask if one of the adults wouldn’t mind waiting in the car.

Finally, from all of the team at Pulman, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Stunning New £300,000 Refurbished Pulman SEAT Showroom With Brand New CUPRA Corner

Pulman SEAT and CUPRA team at the new refurbed launch party - October 2019

Over the last 3-months Pulman SEAT have invested over £300,000 in updating their existing SEAT showroom based in Southwick Sunderland. The site has been a SEAT showroom for over 35 years becoming part of the Pulman family in 2010. The fantastic refurbishment revitalises the interior and exterior of the showroom, and also introduces a brand new CUPRA corner.

Little over a month ago the retailer held an exclusive launch event to showcase the brand-new showroom which now includes a specialist corner for the performance sub-brand of SEAT named CUPRA. In 2018 SEAT officially announced that CUPRA, their sporty models, will be a standalone brand in its own right. Pulman are proud to be the North East only CUPRA specialist, with a dedicated area in their showroom and access to the latest CUPRA cars, including an all new CUPRA Formentor. The very first CUPRA standalone car which will be revealed next year.

Pulman SEAT, or more commonly known as Pulman SEAT & CUPRA today, launched in 2010 and up until 2019 no showroom updates have ever been carried out.

A huge 6-figure investment was put into the refurbishment, but not only has the showroom had a total new look, the service area, workshop, back offices and external areas have all had a fantastic makeover too!

The updated design inside the showroom oozes a sleek and contemporary style, which matches the brand values that SEAT is heavily promoting with their 2019 rebrand. The layout of the new showroom is also based on the Avinguda Diagonal in Barcelona (SEAT’s home city), which is the widest avenue in the city which separates the hustle and bustle from the charming and exclusive neighbourhoods. To look at from a birds-eye view all of the streets surrounding this avenue are diagonal cuts, which is what the new Pulman showroom emphasises with the cars displayed in dark grey tiles in comparison to the white tiles, and the desks are all arranged in one corner in a diagonal format facing towards the main entrance.

The refurbishment was completed early September 2019 and an exclusive invite-only event took place on Thursday 17th October 2019. The event had plenty of entertainment during the evening from Gordon Ramsey and Manuel lookalikes to magicians mesmerising the guests, and not to forget the live singer, Andy Barker from the North East who sang some fantastic cover music from the sixties through the years to today. No car retailer event would be complete without a driving race game, this game mimicked real car driving with the car seat and pedals. There was also a chance to ‘crack the safe’ to win a limited edition CUPRA R Estate as well as smaller prizes within the safe.

Drinks and tapas were also served which followed on after a presentation from Andrew Cross and Chris Cavanagh from SEAT UK who spoke of the new showroom and the growth of the SEAT and CUPRA brands.

SEAT UK stated, “It’s an exciting time for SEAT and CUPRA. 2020 is going to be an exciting year for us and the automotive industry in general with electric mobility, with the upcoming models including the SEAT Tarraco PHEV and CUPRA Formentor along with the SEAT Mii Electric which is now available to order. Pulman SEAT are ready for the electric vehicle revolution with products and infrastructure where two charging stations are due to be installed onsite by the end of 2019″.

Pulman SEAT & CUPRA are the only CUPRA Specialists in the North East, and only 1 of 22 across the UK. Bill Mullen, Area Sales Manager, from SEAT UK also attended the event.

Chris Slater, Head of Business at Pulman SEAT commented on the event, “It’s fantastic to see such a turnout to celebrate the re-launch of this dealership. It’s provided the staff with a fantastic environment to work in and to look after our customers.”

“Since Pulman took over the SEAT Brand in Sunderland Alex Paget, General Sales Manager and his team have grown the business in both sales and aftersales.  With the introduction and investment in the exciting new Cupra Brand plus the electric vehicles SEAT have planned for 2020 we’re truly set up to deliver a fantastic customer experience”.

If you’re yet to visit the new Pulman SEAT & CUPRA showroom, head to the dealership based on Burntland Avenue, Sunderland, SR5 2ET and speak with the multiple award-winning sales team today!

Conventional VS The Future: What Is It?

Conventional Vs. The Future cars - what is the difference?

Our latest blog explains the difference between conventional, hybrids and electric cars, read on to find out more…

The popularity of hybrids is on the increase and the future of electric cars is fast approaching, but what exactly is the difference between all of the alternative fuel vehicles which are available today? We’ve gathered the top types below explaining the main differences, pros and cons.

Conventional

These are the most popular types of cars that we currently see on the road today. A conventional car is a car which uses an internal combustion engine for power without any assistance from an electric motor or other mechanism. A conventional car operates on a variety of fuels and most cars today will run on either petrol or diesel gasolines.

Pros: greater mileage range presently, greater range of available makes and models, more cost-effective to purchase

Cons: higher fuel, running costs and road tax, releasing toxic emissions and greenhouse emissions into the environment

Hybrid

In a hybrid car, also known as a HEV, both the electric motor and combustion engine work together to provide forward motion. Usually in a HEV it starts off using the electric motor, then as the load or the speed of the car increases, the gasoline engine starts.

The combustion engine is also used to recharge the cars batteries. The term ‘regenerative braking’ is widely seen and is a process where the electric motor helps to slow down the car and uses some of the energy which is normally converted to heat by the brakes.

Pros: lower CO2 emissions, no road tax (emit less than 100g/km of CO2)

Cons: offers less electric range than a PHEV

Coming soon to Pulman: to be announced.

Plug-in hybrid

Plug-in hybrids, also more commonly known as PHEVs, are cars which can be plugged in to charge its batteries. A PHEV is built the same way as a hybrid featuring an electric motor (supplied by a battery pack) and a combustion engine. The difference between a PHEV and a hybrid vehicle is that a PHEV offers a greater electric range until the combustion engine needs to kick in. The electric motor powers the car for some of its journey and in some instances the full journey, if it’s a short one; once this power runs out the combustion engine starts to run too.

A PHEV can be charged through both regenerative brake (as explained under the hybrid section) and plug in charges; a conventional three pin plug, a wall charger or a fast charger. A wall charger usually takes between 6 and 8 hours so this option would be best overnight at home or if your place of work offers this option, during work hours. Fast chargers which are becoming increasingly popular, can charge the battery to 80% in around 3 to 4 hours. Rapid chargers which are starting to be introduced more commonly at service stations can charge the battery to 80% charge in around 30 to 45 minutes.

Pros: lower CO2 emissions, increased fuel economy, greater electric range than a hybrid, no road tax (emit less than 100g/km of CO2)

Cons: can be slightly higher priced than a hybrid due to the larger battery size

Coming soon to Pulman: Volkswagen Passat GTE, CUPRA Formentor, SEAT Tarraco PHEV, SKODA Superb iV

New SEAT Tarraco FR PHEV coming soon to Pulman SEAT in Sunderland, North East England

100% Electric

A fully electric car is what it says on the tin; its forward motion is provided by an electric motor with no gasoline engine. The car must be plugged in to a socket to recharge its batteries, if not, the car will not run once the battery loses its charge. Sometimes you may see electric vehicles written as EV or Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV).

Many of the fully electric cars which are currently on the UK roads offer ranges of over 160 miles on a single charge, this will only increase in time as the technology develops for future electric cars. As electric cars are on the rise, there are more charging points being installed. As of 18th September there were 9,578 locations in the UK with charging points (Zap-Map).

Like the plug-in hybrid, there are three ways to charge fully electric cars. The first is from a standard household (120v) outlet which can take around 8 hours to charge. You usually find these at home or at your workplace. The next charging outlet provides 240v which can take up to 4 hours to charge; again, these can be found at your workplace or public charging stations. Finally, DC fast charging is currently the fastest charging solution on the market which can be found at dedicated charging stations at some supermarkets and service stations on the motorway; the battery can be charged to 80% in around 30 minutes.

Pros: do not emit any harmful emissions, cost-effective to run, pay no road tax

Cons: higher priced than hybrid and plug-in hybrids

Pay No Company Car Tax On Electric Cars in 2020/21

Pay No Company Car Tax On Electric Cars in 2020/21

If you’re looking to upgrade your company car there never has been a better time to switch to an electric vehicle, find out why in our latest blog…

The Government have recently stated that company car drivers who choose to drive an electric car will pay no Benefit-In-Kind (BIK) tax in 2020/21. HM Treasury say that for cars registered from 6th April 2020, most company car tax rates will reduce by 2% meaning that for a 100% electric vehicle with zero emissions, this will drop to 0%, therefore company car drivers will pay no BIK tax at all.

Electric charging point - 0% BIK Tax in 2020/21 for company car drivers

These rates are also applicable to already existing company car drivers who already drive 100% electric vehicles which were registered prior to 6th April 2020. So, for those drivers who were looking forward to a reduced rate of 2%, they can now enjoy 0% tax in 2020/21. The 0% BIK tax also applies to company cars registered from 6th April 2020 with emissions from 1-50g/km and with a 100% electric range of 130 miles or more. In 2021/22 both fully electric cars with zero emissions and emissions from 1-50g/km will rise to 1% followed by an increase to 2% BIK tax in 2022/23 (please see both tables below for a more detailed breakdown).

Top 5 Places To Visit In The North East This Bank Holiday Weekend

Top 5 places to visit in the North East by Pulman

With a heatwave expected this August bank holiday weekend, there’s never been a better time to get out and about around the North East in your car!

We’ve rounded up the top hot spots to drive to across the North East below, why not browse through them and see if there’s somewhere you could visit this weekend!

Penshaw Monument

Penshaw Monument, officially named The Earl of Durham’s Monument, is located between Washington & Houghton-le-Spring and sits on top of Penshaw Hill. It was first built in 1844 and provides fantastic views across Wearside and County Durham! There are a number of steps leading up to the monument but it’s definitely worth the climb!

If you’re not afraid of heights, every weekend and bank holiday between 6th April and 29th September 2019, you can take a tour to the top of the monument via a spiral staircase to see further views across the North East!

Penshaw Monument

As well as the Penshaw Monument there are many walks around the area; from the surrounding woodland to Herrington Park which is just across the road. There’s a large lake which sometimes has boat races and is occupied by swans and other wildlife. There’s also a playpark (usually with an ice-cream van) and café with plenty of parking too!

Whitley Bay

On a warm summer’s day there’s nothing better than visiting the beach! Whitley Bay is situated in the borough of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear and has a fantastic beach with quirky surrounding cafes, shops and pubs! There’s plenty to do in Whitley Bay, our top recommendations to visit are Spanish City, Seaton Delaval Hall and St Mary’s Lighthouse.

St Mary’s Lighthouse is just north of Whitley Bay and is accessible when the tide is low by a short concrete causeway. Once on the ‘part-time’ island, you can climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views along the North East coast. However, if you’re unable to climb the steps there is a video facility which allows you to experience the same views from the ground level. It should be noted that the island is only open between certain times due to the tide times, you can find the times here.

St Mary's lighthouse at Whitley bay

As well as the locations above, there are many fantastic beaches along the North East coastline like Seaburn in Sunderland and Seaham which is a little further south in County Durham.

Holy Island

Another tidal island, similar to St Mary’s Lighthouse but of a much larger scale, is Holy Island based a mile off the mainland Northumberland in the North Sea. The island consists of Lindisfarne Castle, a couple of pubs which offer fantastic meals and numerous walking routes around the island. The Gertrude Jekyll garden is a must too; it was crowned garden of the year by Countryfile Magazine in 2019, you’ll see why if you visit it! There are certain crossing times to visit Holy Island, you can find the 2019 times here.

Holy Island

Durham City

Visiting Durham City is never a dull day out, there’s so much for the full family to do! If you like walking there are plenty of routes along the river and the surrounding woodlands. If you like to shop there are many high street shops as well as original one-off shops. There is a huge range of restaurants, pubs and cafes, many offering delicious food. When visiting Durham there are certain attractions which are must to visit!

Durham Cathedral is in the city centre of Durham and is one of the great buildings of Europe, it’s not hard to see why once you visit! From the structure to the stain glass windows, it’s a must to view the Rose Window which casts colourful sunlight on the Cathedral’s floor (if the sun is shining). There are many places within the Cathedral to visit and you can also climb the tower to view the historic city of Durham and the surrounding countryside!

Durham City and Cathedral

The Botanic Gardens is located in the southern outskirts of Durham city and is set in 25 acres of mature woodlands! Inside the botanical gardens there are a number of gardens to visit including the Alpine, Winter and Woodland gardens as well as the Bamboo Grove and wild flower meadow! The gardens are perfect for families to take picnics along and to relax in the sunshine!

Corbridge

Corbridge is a beautiful village based in Northumberland, just 16 miles from Newcastle and is a fantastic drive to get to! Corbridge is well-known for hosting many annual events in the centre surrounded by the unique shops and pubs as well as the local farm shops selling local meats. A must if you visit Corbridge is the Corbridge Roman Town Hadrian’s Wall where you can walk the old Roman streets, explore the museum and discover the Corbridge Hoard!

Hadrian's Wall

As well as the hot spots listed above, there are many fantastic locations across the North East from beaches and woodlands to countryside and shopping centres! We nearly forgot to mention the Pulman Extravaganza event which ends on Monday 26th August 2019 at all of our Volkswagen, SKODA and SEAT branches across Durham and Sunderland! During the event we are offering fantastic offers across the new and used car ranges, plus when you order your new car during the event you have a choice of four Pulman Perks! Find out more about the event here.
