The all-new Volkswagen Golf 8 – everything you need to know!

The all new Golf 8 is the most progressive Golf of all time. While the exterior design is an evolution over its predecessor, the interior is where the revolution really begins. It’s available to order now.

THE TECHNOLOGY:

It features Volkswagen’s most advanced connectivity and driver assistance systems, and an all-new digital dashboard, representing the biggest technical leap forward in the history of the model.

There is an extensive range of new technologies that come as standard, including the Car2X safety technology (a first for Volkswagen, 10-inch Digital Cockpit and infotainment display.

Car2X technology in the first generation warns the driver of problems, such as end of a traffic jam, location of an accident and roadside breakdowns. For example, if a driver slams on the brakes because of a roadside problem, the drivers behind must react with very little warning.

The Car2X communications with other vehicle of sudden braking manoeuvres by other traffic participants, enabling more time for the other drives to react. Drivers are also alerted if an emergency vehicle is approaching and from which direction even before it’s possible to hear the sirens. Giving the driver as much time as possible to safely react.

The Golf 8 also offer the following as optional equipment: Head-up display projection onto the windscreen; Matrix IQ Lights and a new premium speaker provider – Harman & Kardon.

View key information without taking your eyes off the road ahead, thanks to the new Head-up Display. Data such as vehicle speed, driver assistance system and navigation instructions are projected straight onto the windscreen.

Matrix IQ LED light technology features interactive light control that makes night-time driving safer. Information from the front camera, navigation’s digital map data, GPS information, steering wheel angle and driving speed activates specific LEDs for optional lighting.

Other safety and intelligent driving technology include:

Predictive Pedestrian Protection: which features a camera and radar sensor-controlled warning system. This alerts you if it detects a pedestrian at the edge of a road. This is standard on all models.

Adaptive Cruise Control: helps you maintain a predetermined set speed and distance from the vehicle in front of you. Standard on certain models.

Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC): provides a choice of different driving modes, Normal, Comfort or Sport. This is optional on all models.

Air Care Climatronic: This newly designed air conditioning system has a Smart Climate menu that can be used to activate specific individual functions such as ‘Warm feet’ or ‘Clear view’ = not only at the press of a button, but also using voice control.

To book a live video appointment make a normal enquiry on a car and request this with the salesperson.

Looking after your car during lock down

At Pulman Group we hope you’re all keeping safe and well during the lock down. We took the decision to close the business on 24th March 2020 for the well being of our staff and customers; we believe this was completely the right thing to do.

Whilst our doors are closed we are able to answer sales and after sales questions during the lock down. Our online team can be contacted Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm, visit www.pulmangroup.co.uk for more information.

We’re sure a lot of people have been filling their days with 1 hour of exercise, maybe a bit of DIY or gardening or just a trip to the shops for essential supplies. But don’t forget your car needs some TLC too! We all need to care of our vehicles especially if they are going to be parked up for more than 2 weeks. We’ve got together 5 Pulman top tips to care for your car while its not being used as regularly.

1. Turning the car over

Leaving your car parked for a long period of time can cause the battery to run flat and potentially damage the internal mechanics.

If you can, a good way to avoid this is by starting your car and driving for about 15 minutes every 4 to 5 days, when you go and get supplies from the supermarket for example. This will prevent the battery from going flat and will help to lubricate the engine. If it’s not possible to take the car for a drive, then simply starting the engine and letting it run for 15 minutes will help to ensure the battery maintains its charge.

If you can move the car it will help the tyres by preventing flat spots and will allow the parking brake to be released regularly.

2. Parking brakes

There are three types of parking brakes on Volkswagen Group vehicles:

Traditional Handbrake

Traditional Handbrake

When parking your car place the vehicle in first gear or reverse depending on any incline or decline considerations.  Then disengage the handbrake.  This will prevent the car rolling but will also prevent the handbrake binding and causing damage. Remember to re-apply the handbrake and to disengage the clutch when you next start the car.

Electronic Handbrake

Electric Handbrake
Again when parking place the vehicle in gear, turn the auto hold function off.  Remove the keys from the ignition and the vehicle will be parked in gear without the parking brake engaged.  As with the traditional handbrake remember to re-apply the handbrake and to disengage the clutch when you next start the car and if you use the Auto Hold function, re-apply that too.

Foot Operated Parking Brake

This type of parking brake is limited to a few VWG vehicles; some older Volkswagen Touareg’s and Phaeton’s.  When parking up these cars place the automatic gear selector in Park (P) and don’t engage the foot operated parking brake.  The vehicle will be held in gear and this will prevent the parking brake binding and causing damage to your car if left standing for a prolonged period.

3. Parking indoors or covering the car

Car Covers
Before storing your car, it’s a good idea to give it a wash to prevent grime from building up and damaging the paintwork.

Remember to clean the tyres, as they tend to hold on to grease, as well as brake shavings and mud which can all cause damage over time, so be sure to clean these thoroughly at the end of the wash.

Rinse the car with free-flowing water before drying with a soft leather chamois or soft micro-fibre towel and finish with a good quality wax.

4. Protect the interior

Remember to clean the interior of your car if it’s going to be left for a long time. Organic debris such as food can rot over time, which at the very least means you’ll be returning to a bad smell, and in some extreme cases can cause damage to your car’s interior.

If your car has leather or coated fabrics, wipe dust away with a dry cloth regularly and for a deeper clean, use a damp cloth and gentle soap to rub the fabric down. Always soak up any leftover moisture with a dry cloth afterwards.

For other fabric seats, be sure to vacuum the material to prevent dust accumulation and never use harsh chemicals or household laundry soaps as these can cause discolouration. When getting out a stain, detergents and solvents can be used to get the mark out, but be careful to not use too much water as moisture can lead to damp and musty odours.

5. Exterior Protection

Before storing your car, it’s a good idea to give it a wash to prevent grime from building up and damaging the paintwork.

Remember to clean the tyres, as they tend to hold on to grease, as well as brake deposits and mud which can all cause damage over time, so be sure to clean these thoroughly at the end of the wash.

If the car has been standing make sure you tackle bird droppings quickly as the uric acid is quite high at 3.5 to 4 ph. The acidity can damage paintwork leaving unsightly rings.

Finally, rinse the car with free-flowing water before drying with a soft leather chamois or soft microfibre towel and finish with a good quality wax or polish.

These tips should help to keep your car in a sound mechanical state and protect it inside and out until you can regularly use it.

Beat the Tax Increase on the 1st April For New Cars

Are you looking to purchase a new car? Avoid paying more for your new car as the road tax will increase from the 1st April 2020.

The Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) or road fund licence is what every driver pays in the UK. The VED looks at for example the type of vehicle itself, the CO2 emissions emitted, the fuel type and the engine size, at the time of the first registration to calculate the cost of road tax.

Over the last few years the way car manufacturers test the CO2 emissions emitted has changed. Previously it was through the New European Driving Cycle test (NEDC), however due to car and technological developments it has been deemed that this test is not a true or ‘real-life driving’ reflection.

Therefore, this test is being replaced by the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Procedure (WLTP). Giving a more realistic measurement of fuel consumption, driving range and CO2 emissions.

This change of tax and introduction of WLTP testing will start from the 1st April for VED and 6th April for Company car, Benefit-in-Kind tax.

1st April 2020 Tax bands:

(Data from Gov.uk)

This increase will affect all new cars from the 1st April. This increase does not apply to used cars or cars registered in previous years.

To find out how much a new Volkswagen, SEAT, CUPRA or SKODA could increase by after the 1st April please contact us on enquiries@pulmangroup.co.uk or

Driving Home For Christmas

Driving home for Christmas driving tips

Many families will take to the roads this Christmas to meet relatives. Take a look at our top tips for staying safe on the roads this festive season…

Whether you’re heading home for Christmas, visiting family members afar or spending Christmas in a holiday home, it’s important that you check over your car before heading on these journeys and stay safe on the road during the festive period. Take a look at our top tips below.

Check The Weather & Traffic Before You Set Off

Although so far the UK weather has been quite mild, there may still be some risks of black ice and flooding. Make sure you check the weather the evening before you set off so you can plan your route and drive to the conditions. If there is going to be snow or heavy rainfall, drive slower and leave a larger distance between yourself and the car in front.

It’s also wise to check the traffic before you head off on your journey in case there are any accidents, flood warnings or road closures in place. It’s best to check with your local news or input the directions into Google Maps and Google will provide you with the quickest route.

Keep Your Car Maintained

To ensure your car is ready for the cold winter months why not book your car in for a Pulman Winter Health Check for £20*. Included in the check is an Express Visual Check which identifies any health issues which may need fixing immediately or in the near future. Plus take home your own Winter Care Kit which includes De-Icer, Ice-Scraper and Screenwash. After your car has had its Winter Check at Pulman, it will receive a wash and vacuum.

Make sure all of your essential fluids are topped up such as your brake fluid, oil, Screenwash and check your tyres have enough air in them. As the evenings turn darker earlier during the winter months, make sure you check your lights too.

Avoid Driver’s Fatigue

If you’re travelling far this Christmas, ensure you have had plenty of sleep the night before, and if possible, switch the dedicated driver throughout the journey. If you do come across tired and you’re the only driver, take regular breaks at service stations for a quick drink and a bite to eat; it’s also wise to turn the heating down in your car now and again so it doesn’t get too stuffy!

When you’re driving through built-up areas such as towns and villages make sure you’re aware of your surroundings. During the festive period there are a lot more people on the streets enjoying Christmas celebrations and may not be as aware as you when walking near the road!

Make Sure You Have Enough Fuel/Electric Range

If you’re heading on a long journey to spend Christmas with relatives, don’t leave your car short on fuel as some fuel stations close during the Christmas period. There’s nothing worse than driving around a new area searching for a petrol station plus you’ll find fuel pricier if you go to a service station just off the motorway.

If you own an electric vehicle, make sure you charge your EV until you’re about to leave (if you have wallbox installed at home or charge throughout the night). If you’re unable to charge at home, find your local EV station on Zap Map and use a rapid charger.

Be Careful The ‘Morning After’

Many people enjoy a couple of drinks over the festive period but on the morning after if you know you’re going to be the dedicated driver, take it easy the night before and stop drinking early on. Between Christmas and New Year the police are more prone to breathalyse you; if you are the only one driving to meet relatives or friends, wait till later in the day after a good breakfast and lunch before you head off and remember we can all still have a good time without loads of alcohol!

Breakfast

Don’t Leave Gifts On Show

If you’re quickly running to the shops or at a service station before you head on your Christmas journey, make sure you don’t leave any gifts or valuables on show. Anything which looks expensive or wrapped in Christmas paper on show in your car will attract thieves, who may try to break into your car. To avoid the potential risk, place all gifts in the boot or if there is more than one of you travelling, ask if one of the adults wouldn’t mind waiting in the car.

The New Volkswagen Mk8 Golf Coming Soon To Pulman Volkswagen

New Volkswagen Golf Mk8

The new Volkswagen Golf 8 was unveiled at the end of the October 2019 with a refreshed exterior and total interior redesign. Find out more about the design and features in our latest blog…

The new Volkswagen Golf 8 will join the family hatch category and will be the first model from Volkswagen to feature a e-TSI engine with a mild-hybrid system. The e-TSI uses a Lithium-ion battery to help power the engine at low speeds and reduces fuel consumption and emissions. The battery is recharged using energy from braking and coasting.

Exterior

The exterior of the new Golf is clean and sharp. The LED headlights are now narrower and the biggest change in comparison to previous generations is the front grille. The grille is a lot more prominent and sits lower which helps to increase the car’s performance. The bumper on the new Golf varies depending on the trim; the SEL trim will feature 3 distinctive fins spanning the width of the air intake, whereas the R Line features a more open front vent with R badging.

The updated cockpit combines all of your settings and features and displays them all on the Discover System’s 10.25-inch screen. From this screen you can easily adjust the air conditioning, navigation, radio, driver assistance systems as well as your driving position. In addition to this there is a second 10-inch infotainment system which features a customisable display; you can position shortcuts and widgets in the desired positions.

The new generation 8 Golf comes with Head-Up Display which displays your speed and Adaptive Cruise Control on the wind shield. In addition to this, the Satellite Navigation and media is displayed on the digital cockpit in front of the steering wheel; this improves safety whilst driving as the driver’s eyes will still be on the road ahead.

Voice Control can also be used to amend Satellite Navigation routes as well as calculate new routes, access and call or message contacts in the address book, change the radio station and even set-up Cruise Control!

If you opt to choose the Ambient Lighting Pack, you have the choice of 32 colours to lighting your car with from blues and pinks to yellows and greens.

Technology

The new Volkswagen Mk8 Golf is full of advanced technology features to ensure journeys are smooth, safe and comfortable. One of the most innovative technology features to date for Volkswagen and included in the new Mk8 Golf is the Car2X Technology. With Car2X, if another car has this technology and it’s enabled, real-time data can be shared between the cars. To break it down into simpler terms, say there is a car with this technology stuck in a traffic jam ahead of you and your Golf is still cruising down the motorway approaching this traffic jam. The Car2X technology ahead of you will wirelessly connect and send the real-time data to your car, your car will then inform you to slow down as you are approaching a traffic jam.

New Volkswagen Golf Mk8

There are multiple Driver Assistance features including Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist and Travel Assist. Travel Assist ensures that you stay in your lane and during heavy traffic times, can automate acceleration and braking to make driving less tiring in these situations. In addition to Adaptive Cruise Control, there is an optional extra; Dynamic Cruise Control, this gives you the option of 3 types of Cruise Control (COMFORT, SPORT and ECO). Always stay connected in the new Golf 8 with We Connect from Volkswagen. Your smartphone connects with your car and from this keeps you updated with future car services as well as breakdown assistance contact and an online anti-theft alarm.

New Volkswagen Golf Mk8 unveil

The new Volkswagen Golf is rumoured to be on sale in the UK in spring 2020, although an official date from Volkswagen is still yet to be announced. There will be four trims available; the S, SE, SEL and R Line with a range of petrol and diesel engines, including the new e-TSI engine as mentioned previously.

4 In A Row for South Shields FC and Pulman

South Shields FC & Pulman

Pulman Group is proud to announce that it has extended its sponsorship of South Shields FC into a fifth season.

The partnership has driven great benefits for both parties since Pulman became the club’s official media sponsor in 2015, and has been revved up further for the 2019-20 season.

As well as continuing as the Mariners’ media sponsor, Pulman now also has its logo featured on the club’s first-team shirts after becoming its back-of-shirt sponsor.

It is further evidence of a blossoming relationship which began the same year Geoff Thompson took over as South Shields FC’s chairman and returned the club to Mariners Park after a two-year exile in Peterlee.

Pulman was one of the first companies to throw its support behind Mr Thompson’s venture and great success has followed, with the Mariners winning three successive promotions between 2015 and 2018, lifting a national trophy at Wembley and harbouring fantastic ambitions to eventually reach the English Football League (EFL).

The club also plans to continually improve its Mariners Park ground, with a planning application having recently been made to introduce a new 902-seater stand next summer. The ground’s current capacity is 3,450 and attendances average around 1,500.

The club submitted its application to South Tyneside Council in September 2019 for a number of reasons, but primarily to improve the matchday experience of supporters and satisfy a greater demand for tickets.

The Mariners’ long-term challenge is to make it to the EFL and its ground plans centre around ensuring Mariners Park is ready to host Football League matches.

As well as the additional stand, plans have also been submitted for the club to build a multi-purpose sports hall and hub which would support the local community and wider public.

The club now has new strips with Pulman Volkswagen on the back of the shirts.

Pulman Group recently visited the club for their latest photo and video shoot with the first-team players in their new strips.

Joining Pulman and the club were Alan Hewson (Alan Hewson Photography) and Callum Parkinson (The Social Co.), who filmed a behind-the-scenes short video of the afternoon.

Two key Volkswagen models were taken to the shoot from Pulman, the Volkswagen e-Golf and the Volkswagen T-Cross SUV.

These models were selected as they highlight the future of Volkswagen, with electric and crossover SUVs becoming firm favourites in drivers’ new car choices.

Fingers crossed too that South Shields FC will be the firm favourites to win the Northern Premier League Premier Division this season!

Chris Slater, Sunderland Site Manager, said: “It is fantastic to team up with South Shields FC once again.

“Here at Pulman Group we are passionate about supporting our local area and community.

“Teaming up with the Mariners is a great way to support Tyne and Wear.

“We can’t wait to see what South Shields FC do this season.”

Conventional VS The Future: What Is It?

Conventional Vs. The Future cars - what is the difference?

Our latest blog explains the difference between conventional, hybrids and electric cars, read on to find out more…

The popularity of hybrids is on the increase and the future of electric cars is fast approaching, but what exactly is the difference between all of the alternative fuel vehicles which are available today? We’ve gathered the top types below explaining the main differences, pros and cons.

Conventional

These are the most popular types of cars that we currently see on the road today. A conventional car is a car which uses an internal combustion engine for power without any assistance from an electric motor or other mechanism. A conventional car operates on a variety of fuels and most cars today will run on either petrol or diesel gasolines.

Pros: greater mileage range presently, greater range of available makes and models, more cost-effective to purchase

Cons: higher fuel, running costs and road tax, releasing toxic emissions and greenhouse emissions into the environment

Hybrid

In a hybrid car, also known as a HEV, both the electric motor and combustion engine work together to provide forward motion. Usually in a HEV it starts off using the electric motor, then as the load or the speed of the car increases, the gasoline engine starts.

The combustion engine is also used to recharge the cars batteries. The term ‘regenerative braking’ is widely seen and is a process where the electric motor helps to slow down the car and uses some of the energy which is normally converted to heat by the brakes.

Pros: lower CO2 emissions, no road tax (emit less than 100g/km of CO2)

Cons: offers less electric range than a PHEV

Coming soon to Pulman: to be announced.

Plug-in hybrid

Plug-in hybrids, also more commonly known as PHEVs, are cars which can be plugged in to charge its batteries. A PHEV is built the same way as a hybrid featuring an electric motor (supplied by a battery pack) and a combustion engine. The difference between a PHEV and a hybrid vehicle is that a PHEV offers a greater electric range until the combustion engine needs to kick in. The electric motor powers the car for some of its journey and in some instances the full journey, if it’s a short one; once this power runs out the combustion engine starts to run too.

A PHEV can be charged through both regenerative brake (as explained under the hybrid section) and plug in charges; a conventional three pin plug, a wall charger or a fast charger. A wall charger usually takes between 6 and 8 hours so this option would be best overnight at home or if your place of work offers this option, during work hours. Fast chargers which are becoming increasingly popular, can charge the battery to 80% in around 3 to 4 hours. Rapid chargers which are starting to be introduced more commonly at service stations can charge the battery to 80% charge in around 30 to 45 minutes.

Pros: lower CO2 emissions, increased fuel economy, greater electric range than a hybrid, no road tax (emit less than 100g/km of CO2)

Cons: can be slightly higher priced than a hybrid due to the larger battery size

Coming soon to Pulman: Volkswagen Passat GTE, CUPRA Formentor, SEAT Tarraco PHEV, SKODA Superb iV

New SEAT Tarraco FR PHEV coming soon to Pulman SEAT in Sunderland, North East England

100% Electric

A fully electric car is what it says on the tin; its forward motion is provided by an electric motor with no gasoline engine. The car must be plugged in to a socket to recharge its batteries, if not, the car will not run once the battery loses its charge. Sometimes you may see electric vehicles written as EV or Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV).

Many of the fully electric cars which are currently on the UK roads offer ranges of over 160 miles on a single charge, this will only increase in time as the technology develops for future electric cars. As electric cars are on the rise, there are more charging points being installed. As of 18th September there were 9,578 locations in the UK with charging points (Zap-Map).

Like the plug-in hybrid, there are three ways to charge fully electric cars. The first is from a standard household (120v) outlet which can take around 8 hours to charge. You usually find these at home or at your workplace. The next charging outlet provides 240v which can take up to 4 hours to charge; again, these can be found at your workplace or public charging stations. Finally, DC fast charging is currently the fastest charging solution on the market which can be found at dedicated charging stations at some supermarkets and service stations on the motorway; the battery can be charged to 80% in around 30 minutes.

Pros: do not emit any harmful emissions, cost-effective to run, pay no road tax

Cons: higher priced than hybrid and plug-in hybrids
