The sixth generation of the Volkswagen Polo has arrived at Pulman Volkswagen. It’s hard to believe that the first Polo arrived in this country over 40 years ago. A sizeable chunk of the UK population will have either owned, driven or ridden in a VW Polo.
As with every new generation of any model, the latest Volkswagen Polo is slightly longer and slightly wider than the outgoing model. It also sits slightly lower. The word ‘slightly’ is important here because Volkswagen is onto a good thing with the Polo. Any radical change is likely to upset current owners who may be thinking of updating their current Polo.
Consequently, Volkswagen has succeeded in keeping a familiar look whilst also giving the new Polo a sufficient makeover to make it look bang up-to-date. It’s only when you park the new model against a 5th generation Polo that you spot the differences.
The big changes are to be found inside. There is a real sense of quality throughout the cabin. As with every Volkswagen, it feels solid. The soft-touch fascia has panel inserts which can be personalised depending on which trim you go for, allowing you to choose from a variety of colours. In other words, you can create your own interior.
In terms of goodies, every version of the new Volkswagen Polo comes with air conditioning, front powered windows, a touch-screen colour display which helps you use the audio system (DAB comes as standard), play MP3 files, CDs and connect your ‘phone via Bluetooth. There are even driver tips and journey details. You can also, when safe to do so, read, compose and send SMS messages using the touch-screen display. To be honest, it’s the sort of kit you would only expect to find in a much more expensive car. The same applies with the level of safety equipment, most of which you will never know about until you suddenly need it. You are surrounded by air bags. There is an emergency assist braking and pedestrian monitoring.
Oh, talking of expense, one thing that hasn’t changed with the new Volkswagen Polo, is that it still represents terrific value for money and comes with a high level of standard specification.
Prices for the new Polo start at £13,855. This gets you into the Polo S with a 64bhp 1.0 litre TSi petrol engine.
Add £775 and move up to the Polo SE which means you now get powered and heated door mirrors, powered front and rear windows, really smart alloy wheels, and a leather trimmed multi-function steering wheel. You also get Volkswagen’s amazing Car-Net App-Connect smartphone integration which shows your mobile phone apps on the car’s touch-screen. You also have the choice of 5-speed manual or 7-speed automatic gearbox.
The engine choice is also broad with a selection of TSi petrol engines with varying power outputs or an incredibly economical 1.6 litre TDi diesel engine. You‘ll manage 76mpg yet still achieve a 0-60 mph time in a shade over 12 seconds.
One of your favourites is the Volkswagen Polo R-Line (£17,830) which gives the car a seriously purposeful appearance thanks to special front and rear bumpers, stunning alloy wheels, tinted rear windows and sports seats. If you want the perfect combination of performance and economy, head for the 114bhp 1.0 TSi petrol engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox. You will reach 60mph in 9.5 seconds. You can have some fun without taking a hit in the pocket.
If luxury is the name of your game, you will love the Polo SEL, but if you want some serious performance, then it has to be the Polo GTi which has a punchy 197 bhp 2.0 litre TSi engine giving you a 0-60 sprint in 6.7 seconds. We’re in hot-hatch territory.
Lastly, if you want the ultimate Volkswagen Polo with performance and luxury, go for the GTi Plus. Wow.
Which engine would suit your needs? As usual, it comes down to how you intend using your new Polo. If you expect to cover a lot of miles or regularly travel with a hefty load, go for the TDi diesels.
Every Volkswagen Polo, even the sporty ones, has a comfortable ride. The seats are supportive and there’s loads of room for both passengers and their clobber. It will happily trundle around on the school run or cruise along the motorway for holiday outings. The car will appeal to anyone who needs to commute, go to the shops or cover high mileages.
You also get peace of mind thanks to a 3yr / 60,000 mile warranty.
To be honest, the choice of Volkswagen Polos is so broad that it’s tricky figuring out which one to go for. Simply looking at the price is often the wrong way to go about it.
