Get Your Car Ready For Spring

Spring clean car

Now that we are saying goodbye to the cold winter weather (hopefully) it’s time to get your car ready for spring! Follow our top tips to get your car gleaming & restored back to its natural beauty…

During the winter months the harsh weather conditions such as snow, sleet and rain mixed with the road salt beating against your car can affect its exterior and interior overtime. Although you should be cleaning your car throughout the winter months to keep the dirt at bay, now is the perfect time for a total spring clean.

Give Your Car A Thorough Wash

To wash the exterior of your car you can simply use a garden hose or if you don’t have access to one, a sponge and bucket filled with cold water will do the trick! Starting off at the bottom of your car will remove the heavy mud and dirt from your car first a the lighter stains should drip off as you move up! Use a large microfibre cloth afterwards to speed up the drying process a don’t leave your car to dry in the sunshine as this can create water marks!

Onto the tyres; to start with if you have winter tyres on you should replace these and you should check for any cracks and check the tread; if the tread is low or you spot any cracks, these should be replaced immediately. If you don’t need to replace them, you should use a smaller sponge or small brush to get in between the alloys to remove stubborn dirt. Finally, you should check your tyre pressure, either by visiting your local petrol station or you may have your own tyre inflator at home.

Top Up Key Fluids

You should ensure that your car’s key fluids are topped up. Firstly, check the water fluid and top up if necessary; you can use water or windscreen wash.

You should also check the engine oil using the oil dipstick but before you do this ensure your engine is cold or been off for at least 10 minutes. Once cooled remove the dipstick from the pipe and wipe it on a clean, lint-free cloth like a microfibre cloth, place it back into the pipe and pull it back out again and look at the film of oil on the end of the stick. You should look at how high the oil film reaches the dipstick as well as the condition of the oil. If you’re unsure on how to check your oil and which oil to use, visit your local Pulman Retailer (Volkswagen, SKODA and SEAT) across Durham and Sunderland and a member of the Service Team will be happy to help!

Clean The Interior

The interior of your car can also take a tough beating during the winter months so it’s important to give the inside of your car a good spring clean too!

Depending on the condition of your mats either clean or replace them. If you’re cleaning them, clean them outside of your car with a stain remover, and if you have time, with a jet wash and let them hang to dry. To clean the seats within your car, a handheld hoover works best as it can get between the crevasses and saves you potentially tripping up around the cable from a standard home hoover! If the material throughout your car is cloth, a foaming fabric and upholstery cleaner can be used, however, if your materials are leather/wood you should check the owner’s manual for appropriate cleaning products to use.

Top Tip For Your Wiper Blades

Although it’s usually wise to change your wiper blades after a harsh winter, there is a tip to try first before replacing them. Try rubbing them in alcohol, if this doesn’t stop the constant smears on your windows, then it is time to replace your wipers!

Emergency Items

If you store winter emergency items in your car such as blankets, a shovel, rock salt etc… now is the time to replace these with spring emergency items. This includes a few bottles of unopened water, a torch, portable phone charger and replenishing the first aid kit.

We hope our guide on how to spring clean your car has helped! Currently at Pulman we are offering Spring Checks from only £20 which includes an express visual check, oil and washer fluid top-ups, wash & vac and an air conditioning refresh. Volkswagen e-Golf

SKODA and SEAT don’t have any electric cars on the roads yet but they have unveiled their concept models at the Geneva Motor Show 2019 earlier this week.

Ready to hit the roads in 2020 the SKODA Vision iV will make heads turn! The concept was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in a vibrant Ultra Yellow and its appearance leans towards the sporty look. The Geneva Motor Show 2019

The Geneva Motor Show 2019 opened its doors on Tuesday 7th March and the Pulman brands have certainly unveiled some showstopping models which include high performance and electric cars…

1,2,3 For The SUVs!

The latest addition to Volkswagen’s high performance division following the Golf R is the T-Roc R SUV combining performance and lifestyle all under one roof.

New Volkswagen T-Roc

There’s no guessing why car enthusiasts are already gasping to get their hands on one, with Volkswagen claiming the new T-Roc R a 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds and reaching top speeds up to 155mph. It’s already been around the famous Nürburgring completing numerous laps in disguise undergoing development testing.

There is an array of options available with standout sport features including the Akrapovic sports exhaust and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside the sport-look continues with fabric sport seats, an additional ‘race’ driving mode added to the selection and a flat-bottomed R steering wheel.

The new T-Roc R is expected to be with us by the end of the year!

Superior performance, maximum comfort and clean giant all sum up the new Touareg V8 TDI which is celebrating its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show.

This SUV is now the most powerful model from the Volkswagen brand with its output of 310 kW / 421 PS and goes from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds! The new V8 version also complies with the Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard.

New Volkswagen Touareg

As standard you’ll be indulged in comfort from the leather interior to the air suspension through to the glass covered Innovision Cockpit and driver assist systems. The assist systems includes ‘Traffic Jam and Roadwork Lane Assist’ and ‘Night Vision’ which detects pedestrians and animals using a thermal image camera maximising your safety whilst in the giant SUV.

The new Volkswagen Touareg is due to come to market in May 2019 and the top model range will be available in two packages; Elegance (technical interior design with metal and cool colour tones) or Atmosphere (warm interior design with wood and natural tones)

The new SKODA Kamiq is the smallest SUV model to join the SKODA family and is expected to go on sale in Autumn 2019, estimated to start from £16,000.

New SKODA Kamiq

Although the styling mimics its larger siblings, the Karoq & Kodiaq, the Kamiq has set a new bold statement amongst the family with unique features. Features include a more upright front grille, slimmer LED lights, and rather than the brand’s logo badge on the rear of the car, SKODA is spelt out across the boot lid. Inside the SKODA Kamiq offers a more digital environment than the traditional SKODAs with an infotainment touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard, lane assist and automatic emergency braking as standard.

The front and rear axles have been set further apart creating extra space inside, especially in terms of leg room for rear seat passengers and can easily be adapted depending on your intended use of the new Kamiq. For example, the rear bench splits and folds creating that extra space in the back, perfect if you’re moving house or travelling on a summer holiday! To add to that, if you’re visiting a DIY store and need to transport a longer item back to your home, the front passenger seat can fold down!

Waiting until the second day of the Geneva event, Cupra revealed a new Special Edition of the Ateca SUV.

CUPRA Ateca Special Edition

This performance SUV is fitted with Cupra’s trademark copper detailing across the door mirrors, spoiler and wheels. The copper continues inside as does the sporty-feel with sports seats, rear seats and door panels all finished in Petrol Blue Alcantara.

Although the specification hasn’t been fully released we do know this new performance car is due to open for orders by the end of 2019.

To celebrate one year since the Cupra brand was launched separately from SEAT, Cupra are celebrating by revealing the Cupra Formentor concept, which you may notice is similar to the Cupra Ateca Special Edition above!

CUPRA Formentor

Although full specification is yet to be released the Formentor is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain which produces 242bhp. Cupra claim that the coupe-SUV is capable of driving around 30 miles on electric power alone!

Designed to be a halo car for the Cupra brand, the Formentor features a new floating dashboard layout, a set of carbon-fibre-backed bucket seats, a digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch panoramic infotainment system with satellite navigation.

The Cupra Formentor is due to go on sale in 2020.

It’s Electrifying…

Inspired by the 1960s and 1970s Beetle-based dune buggy, Volkswagen have introduced the ID Buggy concept, one of the craziest concepts revealed at Geneva Motor Show in 2019, and we agree you’d certainly be seen on the streets driving it!

Volkswagen ID Buggy Concept

Reaching speeds of up to 99mph and covering 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds, this rear-mounted electric motor offers a range of 155 miles (during WLTP test cycle), perfect for the thrill seekers travelling through dunes & across beaches. Not to forget the Buggy is equipped with off-road tyres and LED lit VW logos just to make it look that little more thrilling!

The Volkswagen ID Buggy concept is currently built with two seats, but any production model is likely to feature four seats. As you can see above the ID Buddy has no doors or a roof, this is for easy access, however, a detachable cover has been developed to protect the driver and passengers from poor weather conditions.

VW design chief Klaus Bischoff told Autocar, “The Buggy is all about going back to basics, we wanted to show that there will be a place for simple, fun cars in the future.” And with that statement, we will leave it here.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in Ultra Yellow, the all-electric SKODA VISION iV concept car certainly turned heads at the SKODA stand.

SKODA VISION iV Concept

The SUV-coupe impresses with sporty, emotive lines and a dynamic driving experience is promised by all-wheel drive and two electric motors providing 303bhp and offering a range of 310 miles (on the WLTP test cycle). In just 30 minutes the battery can be charged to 80% of its capacity using the latest rapid chargers, so you won’t need to wait too long! SKODA claims the VISION iV can go from 0-62mph in just 5.9 seconds and reach an electronically top speed of 112mph.

Inside the VISION iV concept there is a unique two-spoke steering wheel accompanied by a pair of deep bucket seats for added comfort. Technology-wise there is a floating infotainment system in the middle of the dash where two mobile phones can be connected to the system and the dash supports wireless charging. Other highlights include permanent on-board 5G connection, real-time traffic updates and intelligent speech recognition.

The VISION iV production model is expected to arrive late 2020, early 2021.

Adapting to city life and the environment, SKODA have provided an insight to the future of microbility with the Klement; an electric two-wheel concept.

SKODA Klement Concept

The e-bike from SKODA is fully electric and includes a range of quirky features which you wouldn’t usually find on previous e-bikes. A few examples are fixed pedals providing comfort for the rider, cruise control, hill hold assist, a heated seat and can reach speeds of up to 28mph!

Guido Haak, Head of Product Management at ŠKODA AUTO, said, “Micromobility is becoming increasingly important in cities. By presenting the KLEMENT at the Geneva Motor Show, we are showcasing our vision for the future of micromobility: sustainable, innovative, electric and with a pure, modern design.”

Expected to go on sale in 2020, SEAT have revealed the el-Born concept car, SEAT’s first 100% electric hatchback. Described as futuristic, practical and comfortable, the SEAT el-Born is the next generation of family hatchbacks following on from the SEAT Leon.

SEAT el-Born Concept

Providing a range of 261 miles (during the WLTP test cycle) and can cover the 0-62mph sprint in 7.5 seconds, the el-Born is powered by a single 202bhp electric motor. Heading on a longer journey? Don’t worry, charging to 80% of the capacity takes just 47 minutes, so that’s a perfect excuse for a quick pit stop for some food!

Step inside the SEAT el-Born and you’ll find an array of features to keep yourself & passengers occupied during your journeys including a 10 inch touchscreen infotainment system which angles more towards the driver. As there is no engine, SEAT have maximised the room inside the car which provides numerous storage solutions including under the centre console between the two front seats.

Last But Certainly Not Least…

Limited to only 2,000 units, Volkswagen have introduced the Passat Variant R-Line Edition with high-end configuration and top-of-the-range engines.

Passat Variant R-Line Edition

As it’s painted in a Moonstone Grey finish, VW have contrasted the design with black features including a high-gloss black roof, wing mirror caps and roof rail. Step inside and the black finish dominates the interior.

The latest technology is included as standard in the new Variant R-Line including Digital Cockpit and 9.2-inch Discover Pro navigation system with integrated SIM card and R-Line start screen. Also there’s a bonus for Apple Users thanks to the new wireless App Connect; iPhone apps can be wirelessly integrated into the infotainment system via Bluetooth for the first time, using Apple CarPlay. Another new feature is Travel Assist, this system means that the Passat is one of the first cars worldwide to have partially assisted driving up to speeds of 130mph.

Pre-sales of the limited edition will begin in Europe in May.

Now what a show starter the Geneva Motor Show has been this year already! Remember to follow our social channels to be kept up-to-date with all of the latest news from the event!

60 Years of the SKODA Octavia

Ever since the automotive industry’s pioneering days, SKODA has been streets ahead – turning out cutting edge technologies and innovations. SKODA have always been passionate about people-moving technology, from bikes to cars they . Let’s take a trip down memory lane by looking at the SKODA Octavia…

This year we are celebrating  60 years since the production of the SKODA Octavia was launched! In January 1959, the first of this legendary model series rolled off the production line at the Mladá Boleslav plant. It was the brand’s eighth model after the Second World War and also the eighth SKODA model with the state-of-the-art independent suspension, which the manufacturer introduced in 1933

The Original

The first two-door version of the SKODA Octavia left the main plant in Mlada Boleslav in January 1959. The top speed was 110km/h; the average consumption was 7.7 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres.

The attractive, flowing body design was just as impressive as its driving characteristics. Technical innovations, including the from axle with coil springs and torsion bar stabiliser, gave the Octavia a high degree of ride comfort andeasy handling. The introduction of asymmetric headlamps during 1959 increased its saftey.

SKODA presented a more powerful variant in 1959 with the Octavia Super, featuring a 1.2 litre engine and a peak output of 33kW. Demand for the Octavia model range rose sharply at home and abroad.

Octavia Interior Original

The Rally Champion

On 10 March 1960, the sporty ŠKODA OCTAVIA Touring Sport (TS) was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, which boasted an engine output of 37kW (50hp). ŠKODA applied to the World Automobile Federation (FIA) for homologation of the TS for racing and rallying in the class of unmodified road vehicles –  paving the way for the 130km/h two-door model in motor sport. The OCTAVIA TS scored a hat-trick at the famous Monte Carlo Rally, with victories in1961,1962 and 1963.

Rally Octavia

The COMBI

ŠKODA presented the OCTAVIA COMBI in Brno on 11 September 1960, featuring a two-piece, horizontally split tailgate. Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the vehicle comfortably seated five and provided 690 litres of boot space with a loading length of 0.965 metres. After folding down the rear backrests, the luggage compartment capacity increased to up to 1,050 litres.

The two-door saloon was built until 1964; the last one – a grey OCTAVIA Super – rolled off the Mladá Boleslav production line on 11 April. The all-new ŠKODA 1000/1100 MB with a self-supporting body and rear engine would soon step up as its direct successor. The last OCTAVIA estate model left the Kvasiny line on 21 December 1971. Between 1959 and 1971, a total of 360,000 ŠKODA OCTAVIAs were produced, including more than 54,000 estate versions.

Combi Octavia

The Modern era – Part One

In 1992 – soon after ŠKODA joined forces with Volkswagen Group – work started on developing a completely new model based on the legendary type designation. On a modern technical platform, former Chief Designer Dirk van Braeckel and his team created a body with an unmistakable design.

The OCTAVIA saloon debuted on 4 April 1996 and immediately gained international acclaim with a high level of active and passive safety. It also benefited from a boot volume of 528 to 1,328 litres. The OCTAVIA COMBI, which was even more spacious and especially successful on the European markets, was added to the range in March 1998; the first four-wheel-drive version was launched in 1999. More than 470,000 estates of the first generation OCTAVIA had been built by November 2010.

Modern Octavia

The Modern era – Part Two

This success was topped by the second generation ŠKODA OCTAVIA, which was built from 2004 to 2013 with 1.6 million saloons and 900,000 estates sold. The second-generation model boasted many technical innovations, including petrol engines with direct injection and direct-shift gearbox (DSG).

Today, the third OCTAVIA generation forms the backbone of ŠKODA’s model range. It has been in production since November 2012 and was fully updated in February 2017. More than 2.5 million customers have already bought the third generation model.

Volkswagen, SEAT and SKODA Drive into 2019 as WhatCar? Winners

It’s that time of year again, it’s What Car? Award season! There’s no bigger prize than a win at the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards. This year we are incredibly proud to announce that we have won a whole host of awards! Let’s see who scooped first prize…

SKODA

The SKODA winning streak has continued as we drive into 2019 with two WhatCar? category wins and four price point victories – that’s an impressive six accolades! The SKODA Octavia was crowned ‘Family Car of the Year’ and the SKODA Superb was awarded ‘Estate Car of the Year’ for the fourth year in a row. Last, but not least, the Superb, Karoq, Citigo and Fabia also went on to win a price point award!

Here’s what Ian Jarvis, SKODA Sales Manager had to say:

“Winning a What Car? Car of the Year Award is the biggest accolade a car and car maker can get. SKODA cars are dynamic, interesting and simply clever – coupled with the Pulman fantastic customer experience, owning a SKODA just got even better!

SEAT

SKODA was not the only winner on the night. Two SEAT models have also claimed top category honours in the What Car? Awards 2019. The CUPRA Ateca won sports SUV of the year and the SEAT Arona won small SUV of the year (for the second consecutive year) at the What Car? Awards in London.

Alex Paget, SEAT site manager, said

“To be recognised by industry experts for our SUV models is fantastic, we are incredibly proud that SEAT and CUPRA were crowned winners at the 2019 WhatCar? Awards. We knew that the CUPRA Ateca was going to be a spectacular car, but when it was delivered to site we couldn’t wait to get it out on the road. The CUPRA Ateca is ready and waiting to hit the roads of Sunderland – why not pop along to Pulman SEAT for a test drive?”

Volkswagen

Pulman SKODA Karoq Review

ŠKODA can do no wrong at the moment. They’re on a roll. Whenever they launch a new model it quickly racks-up a pile of awards for design, innovation, value, safety, driver enjoyment and the level of kit which comes as standard.

Consequently, when ŠKODA launched the 7-seater Kodiaq, the awards quickly followed.

The only snag was that ŠKODA was also deciding to get rid of the much-loved Yeti. Something needed to be done; they needed a small, family sized SUV.

Please welcome the ŠKODA Karoq.

With a starting price of £23,025, the ŠKODA Karoq gets off to a good start. It’s excellent value.

There are six levels of trim; the SE, SE-L, and SE Technology trims are available in the full choice of engines with 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol, 1.6 litre turbocharged diesel plus a really powerful 2.0 litre diesel all available. Scout, Sportline and Edition trims are only available with the 2.0 litre diesel unit. It’s the usual dilemma: the 1.5 litre petrol models offer the best refinement; if you want economy, head for the 1.6 diesel. If you want economy AND performance, head straight to the 2.0 litre TDi diesel engine. All are available with an auto ‘box, and the 2.0 litre diesel comes with four-wheel drive as standard.

The petrol engine returns around 52mpg, but for the ultimate in economy, the 1.6 diesel will crack 62mpg. However, the starting price for the diesel rises by £600 so if you don’t intend doing a high mileage or travelling regularly with a hefty load, stick with petrol power. Our pick would be the 1.5 litre engine which is lively with a 0-60mph time of just over 8 seconds. It feels quicker though.

The first thing you notice about driving and riding in the ŠKODA Karoq is how comfortable it is. The seats are comfy but the ride is remarkably smooth. It soaks up potholes around town yet remains nicely controlled at speed. It will be a perfect family car for either shopping trips or an outing to the beach.

Although moving up the trim range is tempting, most buyers will be more than satisfied with the entry level SE. You get air conditioning, DAB radio, really smart alloy wheels, cruise control and rear parking sensors. Move up to SE Technology and you’ll get a terrific sat nav system and a handsome touchscreen infotainment screen.

The Sportline model looks terrific with its stylish alloy wheels and body kit.  The Scout is aimed at people who intend leaving the tarmac behind and heading for some leafy lanes and rutted tracks. You get reinforcements to the front and rear wheel arches, spoilers and door sills, and there are ‘soft ‘road’ bumpers to soak up any knocks.

At the top of the Karoq range you’ll find the Edition model which comes with, well, everything.

There’s a serious up-market feel to the ŠKODA Karoq. The standard of build is excellent and the quality of materials used throughout the cabin is top class.

In other words, if you are looking for a family-sized, SUV, go and check out the ŠKODA Karoq at Pulman SKODA. It’ll become part of the family before you know it. Nestled in Belmont Industrial Estate, Pulman are your go-to guys for everything SKODA. While you’re taking a look around the Karoq don’t forget to stop for a coffee and a spot of lunch at their on-site Café Dafte – you won’t regret it!

New SKODA Fabia Review

It’s always tricky for a car manufacturer when they decide to renew or update one of their most popular models. Consequently, when ŠKODA announced that a new version of the Fabia was to be launched, customers may have been a tad nervous.

Well, here’s the good news.  ŠKODA has played it safe and the latest Fabia is more of an evolution than revolution. In other words, it’s better than ever and will no doubt continue to rack-up awards.

The new Fabia hatchback and estate are currently only available with a 1.0 litre petrol, 3-cylinder engine in various states of tune.  The entry level Fabia S hatchback, costing £12,255, comes with a 59bhp MPi engine. You can only have this engine in the S trim level.

Most of the other trims, SE, SE-L, Colour Edition and top of the range Monte Carlo are available with the 1.0 litre engine developing either 74, 94 or 108bhp. The 108bhp engine is also available with an automatic gearbox.

For the best of all worlds in terms of power, flexibility and economy, we’d recommend you go for the 94bhp turbocharged TSi engine. Granted, in S trim this bumps up the price to £13,865, but you end up with a car this is much better to drive. It is responsive…0-60 in around 10 seconds compared to 16.6 seconds in the lesser powered engine…and you actually achieve slightly better fuel economy of 61mpg as opposed to 57mpg. It’s well worth the extra cash and will probably hold onto its value better anyway.

The real difference though, is in the driving because the TSi engine is much more flexible and makes the Fabia a joy to drive. You can opt for a 108bhp TSi engine which would suit owners who regularly travel fully loaded with passengers or baggage, but the 94bhp engine will be perfect for most owners. If you go for the Fabia estate, which is around £1000 more than the hatch, we’d suggest either of the TSi engines.

The ŠKODA Fabia has always represented terrific value for money and this latest model picks up where the previous version left off. The S level of trim brings you electric front windows and heated door mirrors; remote central locking and DAB radio, but we’d move up to something like SE trim which adds air conditioning, height adjustment to both front seats, rear parking sensors, Smartlink which links the car to your mobile phone, multi-function steering wheel and smart alloy wheels. There’s even an umbrella under the front passenger seat.

You also have one of the roomiest interiors in this class of car. Don’t be fooled by the compact exterior dimensions, the ŠKODA Fabia will seat five adults and cope with a fair heap of luggage. There’s a touch of quality about the interior too. It should easily cope with the sort of wear and tear a family is likely to throw at it.

The ŠKODA Fabia is one of the best cars in its class. No wonder it has become such a popular sight on our roads. Thinking about taking one for a spin? The best idea is to call into Pulman SKODA in Durham and speak to one of their friendly client advisors. They’ll give you all the information you need to pick the right SKODA for you. While you are having a look around their showroom why not stop for a cup of coffee and a scone? Or perhaps a spot of yoga in their purpose built yoga studio – you won’t regret it!
